Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
the first was a picture I saw of myself at a wedding. OMG, I didn't even recognize the obese woman. I thought I'd looked cute that day, and I just cried and cried.
The 2nd was that I have an autoimmune disorder. I'd been having more and more trouble walking, to the point where hubby could come out and help me out of my car. I could barely do steps in my house. I was on Prednisone and felt icky all the time. I went to my rheumatologist, who did some blood test for inflammatory markers, which measure your inflammation, and they came back NORMAL! He very kindly told me that my pain was most likely due to just being morbidly obese.
I knew things needed to change, and looked up a Bariatric program that very day :)
I saw him for my 3 year follow up a couple weeks ago. I weigh 150 lbs less than the last time he saw me. To say he was shocked and thrilled at the transformation is putting it mildly. I thanked him for planting the seed that changed my future.
This is the best gift I've ever given myelf.
My surgery is scheduled for one month from tomorrow 9/12) and while I am scared, I absolutely can't wait!!
I am perfectly healthy. Diabetes and heart disease are in my future if I stay fat, but currently, I have no issues. So what's the issue? Every time I see a doctor, I get The Talk- you are fat, there are all sorts of dangers, you should eat better (always assuming I eat crap all the time) and exercise (always assuming I don't). Always in a pandering tone, as if chastising a small child. Always with an undertone of thin privilege, the assumption that I am inherently doing something bad or wrong to purposely stay fat. Even when I went in for a freakin' spider bite, I got The Talk! It's maddening.
As with so many others here, I've tried and tried to lose weight on my own, simply to re-gain more and more. I did my research. I found out about the failure and complication rates of the major surgeries. And while my doctor wasn't interested in prescribing weight-loss pills, she started the referral process for surgery immediately.
It was a long time coming, but I want to stop being treated as Less Than.
I remember not being able to get up off of the sofa without a struggle and thought...."How old are you?!" I was 45 years old at that time.
This was the best gift I could have given myself. For those of you that have not had your weight loss surgery yet...feel good about your decision to giving yourself a beautiful gift of better health
