Honey, relax. You JUST had surgery. Your body needs to do a LOT of healing. You have a lot of swelling and that takes a while to go down. You will be feeling better in a few days. Good luck!!

You just had major surgery. You might experience pain from days to several weeks depending on how well you heal and how well you take care of yourself. Be gentle with yourSelf and let your body heal. I took a month off and worked half days for a week or two after that. Getting as much protein and water in as possible one oz at a time will help you to heal faster. Both Are critical to healing and protein melts fat and water flushes it. Healing takes time after major surgery and pain is a natural part of it. Keep taking your meds is my opinion.

Didn't you just have surgery like...today?? I was definitely NOT on the computer...was in too much pain and too drugged up. You will be on morphine while in the hospital and will go home on prescription narcotics most likely. Like the others have said...you literally JUST had major surgery and it will take quite some time to start the healing process. Definitely take the pain meds so that your body can start to repair itself. It will be quite some time before you can drink without discomfort. The swelling needs time to heal. Allow yourself to rest and let others take care of you during this time of recovery.

I'm on my phone, that's why I can post easily. The surgery was yesterday. I was asking how long the pain lasts because it's so bad and the morphine was not helping. Since I last posted, I walked and drank more and I'm feeling a bit better.

If the morphine isn't helping ask for more, a higher dose, or even to switch to something different. I had to switch because it wasn't strfong enough for me. I was put on Dilaudid instead and was on a pump. Your pain should be managed very well in the hospital...if they are not listening to you then get a family member to advocate for you. Pain should not be tolerated in the hospital. I am glad that the walking helped some but make sure you get something stronger before you try to go to bed so you can get some rest. I am sorry they are not managing it better.

It could be the gas causing some of your pain, every time I've had surgery that required them to pump me full of air it HTS 100xxx worse than what most people say they experience, I just can't pass air like most so it goes to my shoulder and upper abdomen you could ask for some gasx just to see if it might help. Pain meds won't do any good on gas pain. Hope you feel better.

Hang in there. It does get better but it is not fun at first. I still feel discomfort and I am 2 weeks out. Please tell your nurses that you are still in pain. They can manage it but only if they know! If you are not comfortable, have a family member advocate for you. Good luck!

Oh goodness, the pain in my left shoulder lasted about a week and a half. I thought it was never going to go away. I was taking morphine and percocets. I still have incision pain mostly because I had a drain in for more than a week (finally pulled it out myself). That incision still hurts.

Oh yeah, as for the sips of water hurting...it does get a lot better and soon. I had RNY surgery on 11/19 and I can take 2-3 GULPS of water now with no problem.

Try to relax. You just had a magor surgery.
Personally never had much pain but I hear some do.
The water will go down a lot easier in a few days.
I was on a morphine pump the 1st night then I had them to remove it. They gave me liquid Norco at the hospital but by day 3 when I went home never needed any more meds.

A lot of the initial pain you will experience is the gas pains. The best thing for this is to get up and walk as much as you can. Slow and steady of course and make sure you try and take deep breaths to open your lungs up. I learned the hard way, 4 days after surgery I was readmitted to the hospital because the bottom of both my lungs had collapsed and infection set in. My problem was due to a complication that only happens in 1-2% of people. I had a large hematoma on my stomach that actually bleed into the muscle. I was in an extreme amount of pain and moving around was extremely hard. I couldn't stand up tall and take deep breaths which caused my lungs to collapse. Even dealing with this pain I tried my hardest to walk to expel the gas that was super painful. I think one of my problems is I didn't take much pain meds, I try my hardest not to take pain medication. But during this time take them, let your body relax and heal. I wish I had done things a little differently. Most of the gas and soreness should be gone in just a few days as long as there isn't other complications. Take it easy, let your body heal, walk, and take deep breaths and you should be fine :)
