F2F Group fiasco ....

Can I please just tell you all how much I love you?

I went to my surgery programs support group meeting last night. It was a fiasco. I have never been around so many women busy on whining and emoting in my whole life. And I was in a sorority, so thats saying a lot. Really, I almost pulled a Lu on these chicks. "PULL UP YOUR BIG GIRL PANTIES AND ENJOY THE MELTDOWN" is what was screaming in my head.

Thankfully, I was sitting in the back of the room with a friend from my nutrition class and we were acting inappropriately and having our own little support group. Except we started laughing at a bad moment (I think someone else may have been crying) and our nutritionist yelled at us. LOL. Well, she yelled at my friend, which was funny because it was my fault we were laughing.

Anyway, you all rock. I get better support, better advice from you all ... plus I get to laugh and celebrate. Seems that is better than crying and over emoting ... to me anyway. Thanks for being real and being great!

I love that it's 1:42 am and you are all awake here with me!

Spoke to my surgeon about how much i have gotten for this forum. His answer: "Oh no, stay away from those online unmoderated groups. They don't know what thay are saying!" My answer to him (silently) "YOU don't know what you are saying!" This from the head honcho of a clinic that hasn't even been able to organize a P2P support group. Go figure!

Having been in a twelve step program for 6 years, Lu's got it right. I called it "addiction substitution". Damned program Nazis!

I have never been to a F2F support group. I have my friend at work who had the surgery, and 2 others at work who had lap-banding, so I have a little built-in support group at work. Honestly the only reason I'd go to one now is to show off. LOL But the hospital is 30 miles away and I'm not driving all that way just to hang out with a bunch of whiners. I get all the support I need right here and at work. :D

LOL - that's how I felt about Weight Watchers meetings. Some people save up everything they have to say for a week and take over the whole meeting and whine about everything. They were torture and my daughter and I almost burst out laughing a few times. They were painful. This is so much better! I love this support group and I love how honest everyone is.

Wow! I guess I lucked out. I've got the best support group! We meet once a month. No whiners or pitty me's. People 3 to 5 years even still come. I tell them all about this group every time and they reference Shelly's eggface site a lot for recipes and ideas. We also have dr follow up groups where he talks protein and vitamins and gives lots of ideas and answers questions.

I don't like those support groups. One person whines about; "me, me, me", everyone else feels sorry for them and cries for them. Oh boo hoo... I can't believe you are sick and not losing weight when all you do is sit in your own filth and eat ice cream all day. No one tells it like it is. My brain was screaming... fuck that you dumb ass. I don't feel sorry for you. You are a fucking pig and you give us all a bad name.

I took a friend with me too. Her and I sat there and laughed too. You can't help it. Some times dumb people are entertaining. Yeah, I never went to another one.

Oh... and the stupid bitch leading the whole thing was a real winner. In front of a bunch of fat people she had the nerve to say.... everyone tells me how skinny I am and that hurts my feelings. First of all, fuck you and second, this isn't about you, you dumb ass.

I love this group too!! You all rock. My dr just told me to watch out for advise that I KNOW is wrong.

OMG! Snikahs got me in so much trouble with my NUT at this meeting! LOL Girl you just made me laugh! You made the whole meeting! I was also lucky enough to meet another online friend there from another site. If it wasn't for Snikahs and the other lady this meeting would have been a complete bust! Although I will say I love my NUT, she is just pretty quiet and I think with this group of whiners you have to be pretty outspoken to get control. I might give next month a try...not sure...probably only if Snikahs goes! I am all about the happy and fun. This meeting was a huge downer. Man, I am feeling good...stop your crying and be grateful people!

I am six months out and have not attended any of the support meeting at my surgeon's office. I live an hour and a half away and they always have them once a month on Mondays at 4:00 in the afternoon, which means I would have to leave work at 2:30 and I just can't do that on Mondays. I have been really frustrated because they make it hard for working people to get there. Sounds like I'm probably not missing out on much, thanks for all the support I get here. You guys are great.

I go to the monthly support group our hospital runs, I find it really helpful. There are a handful of way far out post-ops who are awesome about sharing real experiences and generous about answering dumb questions (one guy is 10 years out).

It sounds like you have a crappy facilitator or the goal of the group is unclear, or both. To bad. I find the relationships there add a layer of accountability that is good for me.

I only had 1 required support group and I'm glad. From the years of doing WW off and on, I'm officially over them. I love the group here, I get so much information.

My one required support group wasn't terrible and I did get some good information, but I won't be going back.

Never been to one in person... I am too outspoken.. proably get kicked out anyways. I like this much better... get more of different ideas from so many different people.. None of the Teams seem to say the exact same thing.. what works for one might not another.. so I like hearing from different people.. trying something else if I need to.. but I do think I need to have them check for Stricture.. this throwing up is getting old.

I think there are probably good things in the 12 steps, Lu. I have seen people get help that way for other problems, but I also understand, I think, something about what you mean. I never cared for a religion or anything that just handed me a bunch of rules and made me feel all boxed in. I guess I can't explain it really well. I guess I would say that the 12 steps should be for whoever wants to use them and I support that but in the end we all have our own individual journeys and I support whatever works for any person and what they choose. It would be boring if we were all alike.

Yes, Val I agree with you. There are some really wonderful principals of growth in 12 step recovery. It's when we think we have it figured out and that there is only one way of doing it that trouble ensues!

There's another oft forgotten saying in 12 step rooms that says, "what works for you would have me drinking/using/eating/ etc, and visa versa!"

It is a group of individuals. Kinda like P2P meetings, gotta take what works and leave the rest. I think what Lu was referring to as 12 step monsters are the folks that say there is only one way, do it my way or you aren't doing it right. Scary individuals! Run in the opposite direction when they approach! Run!
