I am in recovery from alcohol and drug addiction since before I had surgery, So if u need help feel free to contact me, I am always willing to help anyway I can. A drug is a drug for me, be it food/alcohol/drugs.

Yes it is a big temptation for me. I want to come home from work and relax, have a glass of wine, unwind... Last night I decided to go walking to unwind. I have to find better ways to cope! Glad to be back in touch, and I appreciate your question for us!!!

Thank you for your brave and honest post. I have become a severe alcoholic since the surgery and currently seeing a psychiatrist and also seeking help as an out patient after a two week in patient stay at a facility. My drinking was so bad that I could not function. I did share my struggles here as well and was thankful for the support. Taking it one day at a time...

I just had my surgery last week, I had heard that some people do have a problem with drinking after the surgery. They trade one addiction for another. Would you say most of you waiting til after the year period as suggested by drs or did you indulge sooner?

This post came in perfect timing. Like morning flower, I have also developed a severe alcohol problem. I never drank before surgery (3yrs ago) but slowly started first socially and now I'm lucky to go two days without becoming blackout intoxicated. I started counseling, antidepressant meds and 12step meetings, but I'm afraid I won't be able to do this easily. Horrible place to be. I'm so grateful for the honest replies from those who share the same problem.

It's crazy how it happens before you even realize it. It hasn't become a severe problem for me yet, but I too am concerned as I drink way, way more now than I ever have before.

Well, first off, I think this post was so genuine, and honest. I Know it was posted back in September, but I'm catching up on older posts, and haven't checked in here, in a while.

I personally, stopped drinking 3 years ago, just for the fact, that I didn't care for it anymore, never had a problem with it, but just lost interest.

But, my partner is a recovering drug/alcohol addict , and has been clean and sober for 24 years now!

She has started back to AA meetings, only because she felt depressed, and still to this day, says she takes every day, one at a time, because there is always that temptation or thought or memory about having a drink.

I would try to talk to a counselor, and hash it out with someone neutral, or even hit up an AA meeting.

I went to one with a friend, years ago, and it is so amazing, because the meetings apply to everyday life, not just addicts! They are very refreshing and touching to be a part of.

My mother moved in with me in May 2012. I have never been interested in alcohol before but when she moved in, I started drinking. I put her in a nursing home in January 2014. I have a drink now every night just about after work. I am having surgery in February. I'm hoping I will stop. Some days I can go without and others I just can't wait to get home from work and have a drink.

I honestly have a glass (about 4oz) of wine 2 or 3 nights a week. I drank a full glass before surgery the same amount so I don't feel it's a big difference for me. I can't handle beer now and I haven't had the desire to try anything harder but I enjoy wine now and then. I can see where it would be easy to fall into that -- I feel tipsy on that amount and I stop as soon as I feel the effects. It's not perfect but I talked with my surgeon and while he doesn't promote drinking he also didn't feel I was in a danger zone. I struggle more with wanting chocolate honestly .... and that my body hates.
