How long after surgery did you have your first alcoholic drink, and what was your reaction to it?

10 weeks out, I had some Mascato wine. Only 2 ounces and I tolerated it well. I never drink the hard stuff. Don't like the taste of it. I will have some peach snapps now and then. Never no more than 2 oz over the entire evening.

I don't remember exactly when I had my first drink post-op. I am 1 year out today and now-a-days it depends on the day, or what I've eaten, I guess. Sometimes I can feel loopy from just one and some days I can have a few over the evening and not feel a thing. Just take it slow and listen to your body. My body really does speak to me if I take the time to listen to it now.

Ditto to what's been said. I had my big educational session yesterday. She said that the body absorbs alcohol differently after surgery and having one drink is like having three! Also can lead to ulcers. I have never been one to enjoy alcohol so that will be easy for me. She did warn about substituting food addiction for another addiction.

I had my first drink about 6 months out - shot of Crown Royal. I must say that the affect is definitely different and it doesn't take nearly as much to give you that buzz.

I must add alcohol really makes you feel full also - I have had a beer and it took me a few hours to finish a 12 oz Icehouse...lol

I have a few friends with the surgery and also told Vodla is your best decision if any has the least amount of calories. I believe my friend is 6 months out and she drinks. For me I will wait a long time before I try. Not necessary but very tempting when I'm out with all my friends and they are getting hammered went out the other night and still had a blast without it.

My doctor told me after 6 weeks. But the calories can defeat the purpose. So I'm choosing not to drink.

Same here, Feefee. But it's good to know it's not absolutely forbidden. A few sips of eggnog and rum, I'd miss that.

I was told by the nut to wait a year after I finally have my surgery before drinking any alcohol as it can cause ulcers and you don't want an ulcer in your little pouch

My Dr told me 1 year at the earliest, but even then your pushing it. I have a friend who took a few sips of her husbands and got so sick and ended up in the hospital. But everyone is different with different reactions.
