It's easier to drive to Goodwill.....
I have bought most of my clothes from Kohl's with coupons and great sales.... I have dropped a few sizes, but my shirts are OK as I shrink... My pants are what I have had to replace.... I only buy one or two pair in a size that way I am not losing much...
If you can alter nicely and are comfortable, I think that is a great thing.. We each need to do whatever works best for ourselves...
I tried the Goodwill as well and got frustrated.. I am not a good shopper, and I hated going through rack after rack of clothes.. One of ours hangs everything by color.. That annoyed the daylights out of me.. I had to look at every pair to see what size they were... Needless to say I walked out of there frustrated and haven't gone to another one since...
I am just a cheap/poor college student, so anywhere I can save a nickel.... But feeling good about myself and my clothes (even if 2nd hand) might be more important that saving that nickel.
And sarge, I gotta chuckle outta your "I'm not a seamstress"! Maybe it was a sexiest chuckle.... but for the life of me I don't see you as a sewing kinda guy! :) :)
I do buy new bra, panties, nighties, shoes and bathing suits but tops and pants/jeans I go to Salvation Army or Consignment store still. I have slowed down on buying stuff since my closet is stuffed and I have bought some new top/bottoms on clearance sales at like Mejer or Kohls with coupons.
I think it is important to have at least 1 outfit that fits you properly as you go down the scale. I went from 30/32 pants down to size 2 pants...and that's a lot of sizes!!! I had stuff in my closet to get me from 30/32 to about 20. After that, I had to buy. Dresses lasted longer than pants but I always had at least 1 pair of jeans that fit me well. Once I got into "regular" sized pants, I had to learn a new way to shop. Almost all jeans have stretch to them now. Honestly, you have to buy them as tight as possible because in 30 minutes, they will stretch out and if you buy them comfortable/what you think fits properly, you will look like you have droopy drawers! Because I had to buy my pants super-tight, I think I skipped either size 14 or 16 all-together. I had a fashionista friend who made me buy a pair of jeans I couldn't even button. I wore them around the house for 30 minutes and then I could button them!
Also, your shape will change, so a cut that looks good on you at one size may not be the right proportions at a smaller size. Oh, and your feet will probably change sizes along the way, too. I made the mistake of stocking up on cute 6 1/2 shoes and that were falling off me 6 months later.
