Also adding my surgeon has been doing this for 25 years. He is not a "minor legaue" here! He's pro LOL He did WLS for my Grandma when I was 5 and I'm 27, she is still at a healthy weight. My Mom also a patient of his, she's 11 yrs out and at goal weight!

Same here was told to never again...for fear of weight gain and stretching....but I have come to learn that even though many of us have the same surgery not all instructions and diets r the same so I suppose it up to how u want to handle it....I am 5 weeks out have been tempted by have not..

I think like all things, we have to take the best advice and find what works for ourselves. I never drank my calories, not even before surgery. I never drank alcohol, juice or sugared soft drinks. I love bubbles. If I don't drink a seltzer or a diet coke, the truth is I'm probably going to eat something I shouldn't to get through the craving. Is that good? No. But it's my truth. So I sip one per day. I have my eyes open and know the possible ramifications. I have given up so much to gain so much - this is a small concession to keep me on the straight and narrow. Know your poison...

I try to avoid any carbonated drinks unless it has some rum in it. I am almost three years post op and every so often I will work on a can of diet soda. Just a few sips and never whole can. I do know that people I have seen who regain their weight all have been downing the soda. Dont know if this is just by chance but I did notice it. - Paul

KatLin, maybe your doctor could prescribe Prilosec for your acid reflux. That's what I take and it helps tremendously.

My dr said no as well. However, I couldn't resist a sip of Pepsi the other day. I literally felt it bubbling in my stomach. Carbonated drinks can cause ulcers and produces gas in your stomach. Excess gas in your stomach can stretch your new stomach - not good. A sip won't hurt, but after my sip, I didn't want any more.

I tried pop since my surgery and I was in extreme pain for like 5 min. I would stay away from it if at all possible.

@ Melissa ty for the advice. Ive been on aciphex 2x a day since 6weeks out. My doc told me to try the gingerale because when you get a build up in your belly the carbonation will cause it to be expelled and take the pressure down. I take other stomach meds right now too but those are for nautia and cramping in my lower abdomen. :/

Seems to me, that each doctor gives different advice. It's also going to depend on the person. Each person tolerates different things in different ways. I'm almost 6 weeks out and havent' had any issues yet. No dumping, my tastes haven't changed, I'm able to swallow everything just fine. I'm losing quickly and according to my doctor doing better than a lot of her patients. So, I think each person needs to learn for themselves what they can and can not handle. Of course I wouldnt' get back into being a soda drinker, even if it is diet. Diet can be worse than regular soda.

I used to drink Diet Coke almost exclusively. Fear of having to live the rest of my life without it was one of the reasons I put off having my surgery for 5 years. When I finally decided to have my RNY, I knew it was also a decision to never drink Diet Coke again. I've been off DC for 2 1/2 years and its been liberating. Since Ive been off it and done some research, I truly believe it was a major contributor to my over-eating. In addition to carbonation issues for those of us with RNY, artificial sweetener has been shown to trigger appetite increases.

I never want to give it that kind of power in my life, again. Not saying everyone has to follow suit...that's just me.

I was told not to drink a lot of anything but protein and water the first couple of weeks, but the day I got out of surgery, 6 doctors came in as they were doing rounds and I told them I was dying for a diet coke. The nurse brought one in a few minutes later. Best thing I ever tasted in my life. Since then at the movies, once, and at a sporting event twice, I've ordered a diet coke to drink while at the game but usually only have a few sips. It does make me feel full quickly. It's been like most things. There has been no real NO's in my life, I've found, but knowing what's enough. When I've had one, it's been a fountain drink with lots of ice and I've maybe drank 3-4 oz each time. No biggie. My nutritionist and nurse both know about it and say as long as I'm tolerating it and getting in my other fluids, it's no big deal. As far as going back to the 12pack of Diet Coke a day pre-surgery.....I can't even imagine! Having a few sips every few months for something to drink isn't going to hurt, but I'd certainly never rely on it for my fluid intake again.
