Carbonated drinks are a strict no no on my program. My surgeon says it will aid in creating ulcers, he really didn't say much about stretching the pouch. He did say that most people who end up regaining their weight started by drinking diet soda. I plan to have a sip or two on rare occasions if I ever get well.

My program says never again. Not because of stretching but for the potential to cause ulcers and the carbonation will cause gas resulting in pain. I just put my beloved Dr. Pepper in the never again closet.

My Program said to "STAY AWAY" from them. They feel it givees you "Unwated Gas & Bloating" but like you No Real Evidence has supported the Theory that it "Stretches" the Pouch. I have done Research after Research after Research and can't find any Support of Pouch Stretching. I have "Heard" from other Patients that in the Early Stages of PostOp that it can cause "Holes" near the stiches etc. I also have heard (From Others) that they drink it but allow it to Fizzle Down. Well I don't really care for "Flat Sodas"...I LOVE the Fizzle...ahahaha. I akm 7Months Post Op and recently I had 2 during a Week's Vacation. It was SO GOOD too. Pepsi...My Favorite.....Diet Of Course. However....I don't PLAN to add them to my Daily...Weekly or Monthly Intake List. Maybe on "Occassions" when I am out to Eat or at a Party. I was told no carbonation ever again

my surgeon say try it if you want to but most people get very uncomfortable from the gas the carbonation causes

Ive had issues since 6weeks post op. One issue is severe pressure in my chest from the reflux or indigestion. When it is that bad I will have a little like 4 to 6 oz of diet gingerale. I remembered mom giving us that when we were sick as kids.........still helps.

My surgeon says no also.

Unfortuneately I'm going to give you the same answer as everyone else, Dr said never again :-( I miss my diet coke, but I don't want an ulcer.

My surgeon said it is a NO for life - carbonation will stretch the sleeve and it will never shrink down were it should be. I'm not going to risk it.

Thanks everyone! What I did is I actually drank isopure ice cubes in plain water and where it wasn't the same carbonation I was looking for, it was a change in flavors that was unexpected and much welcomed!

No carbonation for me, I waited far too long to have surgery to take a chance in hurting myself in the long run. Thanks for all the support and answers :)

Carbonation is a a very big no no from my surgeon. He did preform a 2nd bypass on a lady that could't give up the Diet Cokes and ended up stretching everything back out. I did have a sip the other day (very small) and my stomach was not happy. I am sure after a year if once a month or so I want one it can't hurt, but its all about moderation.

I'm 5 weeks out and my nutritionist and surgeon said that I should wait a while before i do carbonation again. I have been getting sierra mist and emptying about half the bottle and shaking the remaining amount until it's borderline flat. My nutritionist laughed and said to take it easy with it and not to over indulge. I'd say all in all i may have a 3-4oz of it a day as my little treat. My surgeon said it should be fine since i'm not drinking all the bubbles and as long as i'm sipping it.

Mine is no carbonation also but I will tell you early on I had a sip a couple times and it hurt my pouch and it didn't sit well and it felt bad for a little while so if you try it use caution.

Air in the pouch will cause nausea. That is the reason for the ban on carbonation. I find that even now, at 20 months PO, when I swallow air while drinking (even with non-carbonated drinks), I'll get gas and experience discomfort and some nausea until it clears up. I was a huge fan sparkling wine and mineral waters pre-op. But I haven't had any since the surgery. I may one day, but right now, I know it would bother me, so I don't..... You'll need to make your own choices, of course. :)

At my one month check up I asked my surgeon. "I know you may not want to hear this BUT how long until I can have a diet soda?" His reply was "Whenever you want as long as it's diet and it's caff free"

So I left that appt and got my one LOL BUT It wasn't as I remembered :( I was a diet coke queen but now I very rarely drink pop at all. I am an iced tea fan with splenda :) AND I personally noticed that brown sodas make me tummy feel a tad odd, so I drink Sprite Zero and Caff Frre Diet Mt Dew :)
