need help paying for assisted living

I have the unfortunate of trying to figure a way to get money to help pay for my assisted living rent. I am on SS disability and only receive 1044.00 a month, the facility wants more and I am being threatened with eviction' no one seems to be of any help. I don't qualify for medical and the cavity doesn't accept it anyway. Any suggestions other than suicide?

donna never suicide....wrong idea...there is a way you might just have to move though to a different place....how old are you if I might ask? I guess just because I am thinking some day that is what will happen to me too...I am on SSDI too....

Hi Donna: A while back you came here about the same thing and I gave you the D.S. caregivers group to try to get resources. Many caregivers know about resources for assisted living.

Did you go there and what did they say?

Your other option is to look for an assisted living that will fit into what you can afford.

another option is the Area Agency on Aging and see if they can help you some way with resources. They do help the disabled and seniors and those with AIDS.

I am 55, I have talked to many people who have not been able to help. I'm told that the facility where I'm at is the cheapest but my SSD doesn't cover it, I owe some back rent and they handed me an eviction letter without any discussion. I'm alone and I'm trying not to panic.

I don't know enough about housing to really help. All I'm adding is my own belief...

If you are behind on rent, I think you are in trouble. Assisted living is big business and sadly they are there to make money more then they are there to help others.

Before looking at other options, I agree with AsTimeGoesBy and find an Area Agency on Aging to see if they can help or maybe even get in touch with Health and Human Services...

Hi Donna: Contact your city/town's social worker and get them involved to help you however. Chances are that you will have to move. Salvation Army owns some apartment buildings in some U.S. cities and the rent is reduced for seniors. But they are not "assisted living." You might be able to arrange to go there (you would have to apply and wait for a place to come up, then have the city social worker help you apply for long-term care for you through the state, which doesn't get instantly approved. So get moving on calling the city social worker.

I also thought of some other resources for you, but I don't have your city/town or your state:

1. Below is a link to go to Benefits Checkup. Click on that green link and it will take you to a site and you go step by step and answer the questions and it will tell you if you are eligible for help with various things and if so, that may cut your costs.

2. Below is a link to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Eldercare Locater to find services in your community. Click on the link and then fill out your zip code and it should come up with something. Contact everything it brings up.

3. I quickly read that seniors may qualify for U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Section 202 and Section 8 senior housing, which provide rent subsidies that can help pay for the room-and-board portion of both independent living and assisted living environments. You would have to phone your city/town's Department of Housing to find out if you qualify and what dates you could apply (some cities/towns have a black out on applications and you have to wait to apply--but you want to check this out anyway).. I read a small blurb that Section 202 is for capital advances to remodel and is open to seniors 62 and older. But many times that add limit is disregarded if you are disabled. And who knows what Section 202 all encompasses.
