Good morning! We have our showering guest again today. The ice stranded him in town so he stayed overnight. Turns out I take in stray humans as well as stray cats and dogs. Who knew?

Ever wonder if there's something sadder than a wet cat? Yep. A cold wet cat. Poor Shadow. Got the freezing rain. Then slept on my flannel PJs. Wait. Why is he "poor" again?
Wondering today about various things. Like.... My Polish grandma said, "If you want to know someone, look at who they hate, not who they love." I wonder sometimes what that says about me, y'know?
So I'm wondering.... just in general.... gives my brain a break from stress.

New insomnia cure: The fish video for cats. Stare at that, and down I went. Go figure, right? (Or not, in my case.)
Today in 1770, England shipped rhubarb to the US (then colonies) for the first time. Rhubarb is packed with great vitamins, but remember that the leaves are *poisonous*, even in domesticated cultivated rhubarb varieties (which are about all that's left). Stalks are good, like sour-tart celery, but avoid the leaves! And no, the color of the stalks is not an indicator of their flavor or nutrition. That's a myth. The red ones have a few more antioxidants, but not enough to do more than make it pretty in a pie. And if the rhubarb was harvested after a frost or freeze, *do not eat any part of it*. The oxalic acid content of the leaves is part of why they're toxic, and a frost/freeze on a living plant means the plant sucks into its stem those things that were in the leaves.... Like the high amounts of oxalic acid. (The same reason you can't eat raw dark greens in huge quantity, btw, b/c oxalic acid is not only bitter to the taste but is hell on your kidneys if ingested in excess, and yes, I rattled all that off withotu looking, I cook all the time, and know wild greens, and that's why I only harvest the newest dandelion and lamb's quarter leaves, b/c those are the best in taste and lowest in oxalic acid content.)
So why does a rhubarb "suck back" from the leaves in serious cold? It grows from arhizome, like ginger or similar, and it's a perennial. So, like anything that grows perennially, when stressed, it sucks everythign back to its root/rhizome from which it grows, and stores up for its future use. Yes, plants do that. Cool, right? Anyway, rhubarb originated in Asia and got to Europe as a delicacy (eventually) via the Silk Road back in the 14th century or so (we think?) and then crossed the Atlantic in 1770 and here we are for why I know what the hell I'm talking about when it comes to rhubarb anyway. See? Really, this makes sense (in my head....)
This, btw, is why rhizomes of plants are often so darn nutritious. We eat a lot of rhizomes. The'yre like roots but not. Rhizomes are kind of like underground stems with "nodes", for lack of a better term, and those put out either shoots or roots or both. Cattail rhizomes and the white part of the young leaves are a lovely crisp snack all year, and the roots are heavy with gluten and carbs, for example. (Yes, I've eaten them. Honestly, it's nto different from cucumber or celery, it's all in your head how you approach it...) Other food rhizomes include ginger, turmeric, ground nuts (I tried those once, eh, no thanks), but no, not potatoes!
Potatoes are *tubers*. The difference? A tuber is underground, like a rhizome, but its shape is going to be round, oval, oblong (like, gee, a potato) and it's going to be more "fleshy", an drhizomes will usually have roots, liek straggly hairs or tendrils. For me, the big tell is also texture. Rhizomes tend to be like celery in that they have looooong fibrous, rather flat-ish shape/structure, and you can peel little woody fibers out of them, basically. If you ever grate raw ginger, you'll see what I mean. Also, tubers don't have all these weird shapes.
And all that because I got started on rhubarb. WTH?!
Oh, as for why I learned wild foods.... Grmaps taught me. He needed to know to survive in his teens. Turned out, so did I. I'm rubbish at most of them, but the ones I do know, I *know*, so... in case of starvation, you'll find me out in the pastures and forests with the critters.
Incidentally,t he old tale that if a cow eats it (or goat or other animal of choice) means it's human safe? Bullcrap. Utterly wrong. No cow jokes intended, btw. The fact grazing critters often avoid what we need to avoid is a nice coincidence, but a goat wille at ivy, kudzu, and even rhubarb leaves, and be just fine, whereas we'd keel over dead. *clunk*

And as you wonder what makes me tick (Hint: Chocolate)....
A peaceful Wednesday to all! I gotta grab a shower while I can before hot water runs out.

Lately I've been feeling scared and full of anxiety. I recently found a lump under my nipple. I hurt my back too. I'm in the process of moving. I'm run down. Everything is hard

Well, our drought isn't broken but our gutter is. Got two big storms rigth after each other and, wait for it, a tornado warning. Now, I was already running for my go-bag when I heard thunder. The air felt wrong. The sky was getting a color to the west. Been there, lived that, time to hide.No funnel touched down but the radar indicated rotation, and boy was it visible from the ground. Different...

Miki I'm so glad to hear it warmed up and your puppy is feeling better! Pets are one of the best things in life.
So Cal sorry to hear you slept so terribly. My dog does the same thing! As if all of the available space isn't comfortable enough they have to get between and kick till comfy.
Twin, I'm sorry to hear about your Mom. I had a cervical biopsy and it took about 3 or 4 days to come back, not sure if uterine would be the same. I'm also sorry you're getting slammed. I feel the same way. It's like you try and try and feel like you're spinning in a hamster wheel not getting anywhere.
Sending gentle hugs amd a ton of thanks to you all.
Ugghhhhh just got into a huge fight with my husband about what what happened at the mall. More specifically about what my husband SAID to me last night (when I finally got a chance to tell him and about the report with security bla bla) that it bothered me all night and it was a PTSD trigger. So I tried to tell him what he said bothered me and his response, "No, you're just f****d up, that's the problem." WHAT!?!?!?
OMG I'm a total wreck!!!
Angela, sorry you are so sick. I will have to read your other thread. Take care of yourself.
Kel, I hate waiting for test results, and when they forget to call me, I could ring their necks. I pray it's just a med that you need to straighten things out. Hang in there, and keep us posted.
Maynard, I'm a lot like you. I get anxiety from just about anything. A new job is a stressor in and of itself....then if you are prone to anxiety...look out. Hang in there. It will all work out. Easy for me to say, I know.
Miki, sorry for the bad dreams. I'm right there with you. It's of the reason we don't sleep well, I would guess. I wake up from my dreams quite often. I hope tonight is ok for you.
scgal, I don't think I know you yet. I am a regular around here, but have been very busy for a month. Hope your hubby does not ram around the bedroom tonight for you.
Fantod, let us know how your appointment went. When is your surgery again? I am quite forgetful.
Blue! Someone grabbed your arm?! And your husband said what? I'm going clunk him over the head. (if I could reach that far). We are here for you.
Twinmom, hope all goes well with your mom. I'll say a prayer for peace for you all. Sorry you are so busy at the office. And having anxiety. You are right to turn to God. I need to do the same.
bbmom, I almost missed you. I understand the brain fog so much too. My family loves to play games. I'm the last one to catch on to everything. I cracks up my family, but makes me feel less than. Sorry for the heartburn. That is no fun.
My weekend, and the beginning of the week have been quite stressful. Maneuvering the airport myself was scary. I did it, but it was still scary. Surprising my husband was so cool. He was shocked when I showed up at the hotel. Sleeping, or lack thereof, was horrible. I hurt so bad all night, that I was up walking the floors at 2am, moaning. My husband said I was going to wake up the whole hotel. It was not that bad, I told him. Good grief.
Heading out on Tuesday morning was another scary event. The Uber driver took us to the airport, on a snow covered freeway. I was petrified, as I thought he was driving way too fast. Hubby was worried we would miss our flight. But we made it. Then we were in the plane, sitting on the tarmac, waiting for the snow to be removed from the runways. 45 minutes later, we were in the air. We rode the shuttle to our daughter's, and there was an ice storm, so we had to stay there last night. Drove home today, and only the last 45 min were icy. I'm in my recliner at last, and in a ton of pain. Well, that's my story.
I see there are a lot of new people that I haven't gotten to know yet. I should be around more now....until I babysit at my son's next week. I think I told you that he got a job offer to Albuquerque, NM. I will be so sad if they move that far away.
Hang in there, everyone. We are in this together.
I am sorry to hear the news about your Mom. I am hoping with all fingers toes crossed that there is nothing wrong. Hugs to you too!
Ida, that's a pretty scary travel you did! I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. Snow and ice! No thanks. You're one brave lady. I'm soooo glad you made it back safely... in one piece.
Fantod, what a letdown after a long day. I hope they figure something out asap so you can get back on track w/ surgery. I don't know anything about heart stuff :(. Regardless, any abnormal test result is stress inducing. Biggest hugs!
Maynard, I usually do thrift stores because for that reason....my weight goes up and down. I'll have a bin for my skinny clothing put away and wear my thicker clothes when i'm 10-15 lbs heavier.... and then when the weight comes back off, I pack those clothes away, and bring out the skinny bin. But this time my weight dropped even lower. So I have to hit the thrift store for some thinner clothing. So, it's just how it is. I'm glad you will be working with a nutritionist to help you :)
Angela, bronchitis again? I'll pray for your healing.
