Good morning! We have our showering guest again today. The ice stranded him in town so he stayed overnight. Turns out I take in stray humans as well as stray cats and dogs. Who knew?

Ever wonder if there's something sadder than a wet cat? Yep. A cold wet cat. Poor Shadow. Got the freezing rain. Then slept on my flannel PJs. Wait. Why is he "poor" again?
Wondering today about various things. Like.... My Polish grandma said, "If you want to know someone, look at who they hate, not who they love." I wonder sometimes what that says about me, y'know?
So I'm wondering.... just in general.... gives my brain a break from stress.

New insomnia cure: The fish video for cats. Stare at that, and down I went. Go figure, right? (Or not, in my case.)
Today in 1770, England shipped rhubarb to the US (then colonies) for the first time. Rhubarb is packed with great vitamins, but remember that the leaves are *poisonous*, even in domesticated cultivated rhubarb varieties (which are about all that's left). Stalks are good, like sour-tart celery, but avoid the leaves! And no, the color of the stalks is not an indicator of their flavor or nutrition. That's a myth. The red ones have a few more antioxidants, but not enough to do more than make it pretty in a pie. And if the rhubarb was harvested after a frost or freeze, *do not eat any part of it*. The oxalic acid content of the leaves is part of why they're toxic, and a frost/freeze on a living plant means the plant sucks into its stem those things that were in the leaves.... Like the high amounts of oxalic acid. (The same reason you can't eat raw dark greens in huge quantity, btw, b/c oxalic acid is not only bitter to the taste but is hell on your kidneys if ingested in excess, and yes, I rattled all that off withotu looking, I cook all the time, and know wild greens, and that's why I only harvest the newest dandelion and lamb's quarter leaves, b/c those are the best in taste and lowest in oxalic acid content.)
So why does a rhubarb "suck back" from the leaves in serious cold? It grows from arhizome, like ginger or similar, and it's a perennial. So, like anything that grows perennially, when stressed, it sucks everythign back to its root/rhizome from which it grows, and stores up for its future use. Yes, plants do that. Cool, right? Anyway, rhubarb originated in Asia and got to Europe as a delicacy (eventually) via the Silk Road back in the 14th century or so (we think?) and then crossed the Atlantic in 1770 and here we are for why I know what the hell I'm talking about when it comes to rhubarb anyway. See? Really, this makes sense (in my head....)
This, btw, is why rhizomes of plants are often so darn nutritious. We eat a lot of rhizomes. The'yre like roots but not. Rhizomes are kind of like underground stems with "nodes", for lack of a better term, and those put out either shoots or roots or both. Cattail rhizomes and the white part of the young leaves are a lovely crisp snack all year, and the roots are heavy with gluten and carbs, for example. (Yes, I've eaten them. Honestly, it's nto different from cucumber or celery, it's all in your head how you approach it...) Other food rhizomes include ginger, turmeric, ground nuts (I tried those once, eh, no thanks), but no, not potatoes!
Potatoes are *tubers*. The difference? A tuber is underground, like a rhizome, but its shape is going to be round, oval, oblong (like, gee, a potato) and it's going to be more "fleshy", an drhizomes will usually have roots, liek straggly hairs or tendrils. For me, the big tell is also texture. Rhizomes tend to be like celery in that they have looooong fibrous, rather flat-ish shape/structure, and you can peel little woody fibers out of them, basically. If you ever grate raw ginger, you'll see what I mean. Also, tubers don't have all these weird shapes.
And all that because I got started on rhubarb. WTH?!
Oh, as for why I learned wild foods.... Grmaps taught me. He needed to know to survive in his teens. Turned out, so did I. I'm rubbish at most of them, but the ones I do know, I *know*, so... in case of starvation, you'll find me out in the pastures and forests with the critters.
Incidentally,t he old tale that if a cow eats it (or goat or other animal of choice) means it's human safe? Bullcrap. Utterly wrong. No cow jokes intended, btw. The fact grazing critters often avoid what we need to avoid is a nice coincidence, but a goat wille at ivy, kudzu, and even rhubarb leaves, and be just fine, whereas we'd keel over dead. *clunk*

And as you wonder what makes me tick (Hint: Chocolate)....
A peaceful Wednesday to all! I gotta grab a shower while I can before hot water runs out.

Hey all, i know its been quite awhile since i posted on here. Its been a summer all right. Its been something else........... You know how they say not to open the can of worms? Well a few months ago i decided to find out what my due date would have been for my first baby, the one conceived by r***. My baby would have been due on March 4th of 2006. They would be 20 years old. I was R**** on June...

I am just plain miserable wont whine too much on here, made a separate post, but my breathing's not the best now either. I see my doctor today.
Great rhubarb info! We have some growing right next to my Moms patio. I'll sit out there in the summer peeling rhubarb, sprinkling a little salt on it and eating it. Drives my Mom and Gin nuts...they just can't handle that. :-)
Angela,
Sorry to hear that you are having issues this morn. Here hoping the Docs figure something out for you today. Sending gentle (((hugs)))
Trying to figure out how to put a positive twist on this. A lot of you probably remember that a few weeks ago I want in for a sleep deprived EEG. I wasn't sure how long it would take to hear anything but was naturally curious so I finally called the neurologists office yesterday. They sounded kind of embarrassed that that they hadn't contacted me. Anyway they asked if I'd got my results back...which I pointed out again that I called them because I hadn't. They then said that my vitamin B12 is normal, but my EEG was NOT normal. (They stressed the NOT and said it twice) I was told to make an appointment to discuss a treatment plan. (which I have next week) After some severe anxiety, I was ready to breathe again. I'm pretty sure it's not real bad but worrisome nonetheless. ANYWAY, the positive thing about this is that It was finally medically proven that my brain isn't right! I've been telling people that for years. Oh, one more positive thing...the Vikes will definitely NOT lose a playoff game this weekend!
Hope you all find something to smile about today,
Kel
Angela, I'm sorry you're so miserable. I hope today you can find a little peace and comfort even if it's just a cup of tea and a warm blanket.
Kel, sorry the doctor left you hanging. I hate it when they do that! Glad to hear you have scientific proof, I think I need that study! Haha. But really, I hope between now and your appointment you are able to keep your brain at least somewhat busy so it doesn't drive you crazy.
I am starting to struggle again today. I was doing fine until I walked into work at which point I got this feeling that I want to cry and my body aches doubled. I don't think it takes Freud to figure that out. I am just petrified of the new job process. Petrified my current employer will flip their lid if they found out, Petrified I will fail and not get the job, Petrified I will get the job and then they will find out about all this fibro and pain crap and be disappointed they hired me. And I already feel so overwhelmed with life right now. We'll, at least I wore comfortable clothes today figuring the stress would likely repeat the pain from yesterday. My employer doesn't really care what I wear I just don't feel comfortable in public in leggings or track pants largely because of my weight gain but oh well. No choice of I want to make it through today without also repeating yesterday's crying in the stairwell.
I hope everyone has a good self-care day. Ttyl.
BTW, who doesn't like raw rhubarb?! I eat it like that. Of course, people think I'm nuts for eating raw celery, too. *sigh*
Angela, prayers of luck and healing for your doc appointment. Keep us posted if you can.
I do have a problem with worry....but will do my best to just wait until next week and see what the doc has to say. It does sound like we have worrying in common. I'm sure your boss hired you because they liked you in your interview and they liked what they saw from your experience. I know it's easier said than done but remember that you do good work and that they are lucky to have you! Sending you soothing vibes...
Leo,
Thanks for the support. It is good that they found something wrong if there is something wrong to find...(if that makes any sense) :-). I do look forward to hopefully coming out of this thing better with treatment....maybe even be able to think again. Sending (((hugs))) back.
Angela, I am glad you are going to the doctors today. Feel better.
Oh Kel, they tell you this and make you wait another week? What?? I am so happy that they have proven you do have a brain though. Try to be positive, I know. Easier said than done. Hugs. I do have a funny story similar though. Before I had all but 7” of my colon removed (it had stopped working and was tied in a knot) my sister would go to the appointments with me. She told the NP that she was going to make me a shirt that said “full of $hit and I have a medical diagnosis to prove it”. They thought that was funny. Just know I am thinking of you. When I had my recent tests my friends were all freaking out because I hadn’t gotten the results. In my opinion, I have fibro, I can take whatever else they are handing me.
Maynard, it sounds like work really stresses you out. I get your fears though. I told my employer about my fibro after they hired me. They were curious as to how I could park in a handicap spot. However, they have been great to me. It is against the law, at least in NY, not to hire someone just because they have a medical condition. However, I get the stresses. I have leggings and a long sweater on today. It is my normal clothes anymore. I have lots of cute leggings and as long as my butt is covered, I don’t care what it looks like. I need to be comfortable. Sending you warm hugs.
Yay, good news from Miki. I am glad you and your pup are feeling better. I have bazaar dreams like yours all of the time. I hope your day goes well.
I am feeling better. I just have heartburn now. I even made it to work. Last night the fam and I were playing Yahtzee and I was the score keeper. I couldn’t even keep any of it straight. I had a hard time handling the dice. They just kept laughing, but I could tell it bothered my husband, a lot. It was very frustrating though. Some days just the normalist (is that a word?) of things seem to be a challenge. We had a lot of ice last night. Sonny had a 2 hour delay and the school they were supposed to play tonight closed, so nothing on the calendar to do tonight. YAY!! I hope you all have a decent day.
Leo, woah, I’ve wanted to cook with rhubarb, bur probably would’ve used leaves. oops!
I’m up earlier than usual, after a night of many interruptions. Our little dog, ozzie, seemed to think there wasn’t enough room to squeeze between hubby and me in bed, so he kicked me several times, on my “good side.” Then of course my normal 3 am rousing so I could worry about everything, and try to get comfy without making my “bad side” more painful. Then, a noise we rarely hear here — pounding rain! Then, to top it off, hubby decided that 5:30 am was the perfect time to unpack his suitcase from last week’s trip … with opening, closing, opening, closing drawers and closets doors. OY! And, he’s surprised that I could not go back to sleep. Having a cup of coffee and cuddling with the little kicking stinker.
Hope everyone has a warm, anxiety free day.
Leo - Rhubarb strawberry jam is one of my favorites. I also like it in pie form quite a bit. My Mom used to serve us stewed rhubarb as kids for dessert too. Thanks for the lessons on what not to eat in the wild. I hope that your day goes OK.
AngelaJo - I hope that you get through your doctors appointment OK. I'm sure the prospect of having to get dressed and go out is a bit daunting. Hopefully, they'll have a good treatment plan and get you back on your feet in short order. Fingers crossed.
Kel - You do have a brain! Try not to worry and cross that bridge when you get to it. I hate those phone calls when they need to see you but won't say why. Like Leo said, there is medication which may be all that you need. Try to relax and focus on good things like Sparty. Hugs and positive vibes coming your way!
Maynard - I'm glad that you are dressed comfortably today. Those little things can really help. Have faith in your abilities to do this job. I'm really worried about you. Are you seeing a professional for some extra support? Learning to control stress (to the extent possible) and general angst is really important when living with Fibromyalgia. I suspect that you are probably pretty hard on yourself and that isn't going to help either. Getting out of a negative mind set is so hard when you don't feel good all of the $#%$#@ time. You can learn how to box breathe on You Tube for stress reduction - Leo turned us on to that. Celebrate your accomplishments even if they aren't huge! Hoping I'm making some sense here. Sending you peaceful vibes, and hugs!
'
Got to run and shower. I'm behind...later peeps!
Leo, you gave me a crack up about taking in stray humans too! lol. Poor wet Shadow at least had your comfy jammies to sleep on. I don't know if I've ever cooked with rhubarb, but now I know to stay away from the leaves!!
Woke up congested. Had a headache all day yesterday and hope it doesn't return. I'm hoping this is not a cold and maybe just allergies + VOG (volcanic fog) effects. VOG can cause headaches, runny nose, sore throat, asthma like symptoms (or trouble for those w/ asthma -which I have) , and watery eyes. Then when the VOG clears so will most of my symptoms - I'm HOPING. Oh, and I'm itchy again, btw. But at least the rashes don't look puffy or inflamed anymore, just a darker shade of red. That's good, right? I hope.
I did make a report with the mall security about the weird man who grabbed my arm. They said they can't officialize it until I make a positive identification of the man. So they sent me a text to my phone with a blurry picture. Yeah, right. I couldn't tell who that blurry thing was. Security called me back and said he needed a clear yes or no. Do I have to go back to the mall?! Trouble is I don't want that man to know *I* reported him. Last thing I need is some lunatic stalking me or showing up at my house (been there before). This isn't a big island and everyone knows everyone. ARGGH
In other news... so far hubby's 1st week back to school has been pretty busy. His 1st week starting a new semester is always kinda crazy. When I stopped by to get my laptop Mon, well 1st of all he wasn't answering his phone for hours and I was stuck hanging out at that mall biding my time, anyway, when I tracked him down he looked a little stressed. His lab was a disaster and it was a nonstop kind of day for him.
An uncle is coming to Hawaii for a business trip next month to the island of Kauai. Hubby and I are looking at hotels for a weekend meet up over there. Besides my one cousin, my husband has yet to meet my side of the family. I'm excited!
Back a little
Angela, good luck at the appointment. I've been busy at work and haven't seen all the extra postings other than check-in. I'm praying your misery ends soon. Hugs
kel, thanks for the continued positive energy. I'm really glad they found something, this could end up really helping you. Sending you lots of positive vibes to get rid of that anxiety.
Maynard, I'm praying for your strength and less anxiety. You sound a lot like me when anxiety takes over. It's the worst feeling. I hope you take Fantod's advice. We are all rooting for you, you can calm down and remember you are not alone. I hope it gets better for you today.
Miki, I hate the crazy dreams too, but glad the pain is better with higher temps.
bbmom, I hate when I struggle and nobody gets it. I look fine, but like an idiot to them, but in reality my brain is not working and it usually is stressing me out b/c I can tell. A tbps of Apple cider vinegar in a little water helps my heartburn. I've had it a lot lately. I hope your day is relaxing, and happy that you don't have anything planned today.
socalgal, I wake up so many times at night anymore, I don't even know if you can call it sleep. Ugh. I'm sorry you had a rough night. My daughter climbed in bed and peed on my husband. haha. Not really that funny, b/c I've been up since 3:30am from that fun. I'm glad you are cuddled up resting. Sounds so nice.
Fantod, You probably won't see this until later, but I pray your appt. goes good, and doesn't last that long. My last endocrinologist was good but his appts. were like that. I'm so glad to be with someone else, actually someone better, just an hour wait sometimes. Thanks for your positive words to me yesterday. I read, but was trying so hard to leave work on time.
blue, sorry you are not feeling well. I would think darker is better too. I would not want the scary man to know who reported him either. Good thinking there. I hope hubbies work gets better and he doesn't bring any of that stress home.
Another busy day at the office. I was hoping to go to karate tonight to watch my girls, but I don't know if that is a good idea. Too much work. My mother gets a biopsy tomorrow to check for cancer in her uterus. I hope we get the results back fast. I feel like I am constantly being attacked from every direction, I find a good routine and focus on God and BAM. She may not understand fibro, but she has helped me a great deal with my girls, and watches them every day.
Hoping everyone gets comfortable today and enjoys something. The a/c is running in our bldg. and I'm freezing. My supervisor was complaining about it too.
Kel, it's probably nothing serious or they would have you in right away. Smile? :)
Maynard, aw.....I'm sure they value your good work ((((((hugs))))))
Miki, I agree about the dreams (since I have bad ones too).... I'll take weird ones over someone hunting me! Glad temps are up, wow that's a huge difference!
SoCalGal, your husband sounds like mine. He likes to do odd stuff at odd hours and then wonder why I can't sleep! (rollseyes). Sorry the kickster gave you a kick, hope you're feeling better soon. My cat Silver (weighs 15 lbs) is a bed hog and will push me off the bed. I'm a little petite thing so it's not hard to do, but boy those little paws hurt. Plus he's strong as Hulk and it takes a grown man to help hold him down when I bathe him. lol
Fantod, ooooooh a wellness exam. Gotta love those -not. Glad you have an awesome doctor :). Your wait time sounds like the VA. Not cool. Sending you energy bars to get through the day!
Great. Next door neighbor is mowing the empty lot. Guess I'm just destined to be a ball of snot today. >:(
