who takes Amitriptyline??

I am sure U talked about this already but I've checked almost all the Topics and I couldn't find it ,,so my Question

Who takes Amitriptyline ,,what for and how much of it ?
what r the side effects and What are your experiences taking it``

I was at the doctors today cos of my face problem,,its just the left side ,,its not pain ...but numb,,tingles,,cramps and sometimes my mouth kinda pulls a lil to the left-- plus my eye tic's so many times ,the half side of my lips and tongue tickels funny or gets numb too ,,,its a nasty nasty daily feeling ,,and it gets worse when I talk a lot or laugh
( I want to laugh again )
I had a MRI done (brain ) my eyes checked and I have a mouthpiece for my Jaw pain ,,I grin my teeth at night badly ..
now they want me to make an appointment for an Lumbar puncture
,,I had that twice already ,,eww not again ;-(

Anyway, till then .. they want me to take Amitriptyline ,,(without knowing what it might could be)
He told me it might help ,,MIGHT !!!!
I don't really want to take it to be honest ,,I know one side effect is: u will gain weight ,,and thats a NO,,I would get depressions about that (not kidding)

Desipramine is not the same med as Amitriptyline (Elavil). They are both trycyclic antidepressants but not the same med - only the same class of med.

I take 50 mg Amitriptyline at bedtime for sleep and I have never had any side effects other than extreme sleepiness which is why I take it. The 50 mg is far below the therapeutic dose for depression (which is more like 300 as someone else said) so you wouldn't normally see much n the way of side effects at this dosage.

I don't take it for migraines, but discovered, when I ran out and forgot to get it refilled for a week, that I now will GET a migraine if I'm off it more than three days, so I guess I'm stuck with it unless I want to have wall to wall migraines.

was on it for sleep but was one of the meds that i gained weight,125lbs startred 10mg @bedtime it in Oct2001 & by dec i gained 5lbs by next year was 140lbs! stopped it & lost 20lbs, started ambian 10mg
started it again in 2005 & gained it back stopped it lost again but gained it back w/ Lyrca/cymbolta together
detoxed from everything Feb-june & started savella in july have lost 15lbs but can only take 12.5 2xaday! tried to go to 50 2xaday & get so sick!
lower dose i have more energy & have lost weight & inches=back in size 4-6 again!

ran out of ambian because docs wanted to switch sleeping pill insurance wanted to review all meds!
so the last 3 nights i toke a elvail & it knocked me out was very drogie in morn!
& also noticed once i stopped elvail the horrible numb/cotton wrapped feeling on my feet in morn went away!
woke up this morn w/ same weird feeling in feet & could hardly get out of bed!
& do not feel as rested as w/ambian!
We are all so different Meds react different to ea of "US"
it is still a anti-deppressant so beware of taking to with other anti's=
"sertonin syndrome"!

Stayed groggy all day from it. Helped me sleep. Gave it up for Lent ! LOL !

Did you ever find out what you Had? I have the same issues with no pain. My lip goes numb anytime I talk too much. I can only taste on one side of my tongue and not on the left side. My tongue has extra sensation (if that makes sense) when I talk. And at times or when touched my left side of my face feels like if your hand is about to fall asleep. I've had these issues for 2 months and my doctor put me amitriptyline 25mg because he doesn't know what it is although he claims it's bells palsy. I have been given a mouth guard by the dentist because I the same have began grinding my teeth. Please respond because this is so frustrating.

Heckya - If you might have Bells Palsy and can afford it, see an acupuncturist. They can be extremely helpful in dealing with it. They might even be able to confirm that is what you have going on. Good luck and take care.

years ago after an injury I had to take amitrip as well. It didn't touch the pain but it was to make me sleepy... I took it like an hour before I turned in. One thing it actually helped me with was that I felt a wee bit more at ease around ppl. I'm a shy person, though some would not know that and inside I was never ever comfortable, ever. Ppl who have to speak in front of crowds sometimes take this to help them. They started me on 25mg but I couldn't tolerate and they dropped it to 10 and I was fine. I don't remember gaining any weight from it but I didn't take if for a long period of time either. Hope you feel better.
