So last night I started reading a book about genetics. Yes, that's my ide aof entertainment.
A case study was Charles II, last Habsburg, of Spain.
His parents were uncle and niece and also cousins.
His inbreeding coefficient was higher than is his parents were siblings.
To quote the author, the Habsburg family tree was a "loop".
It is an inverse pyramid. If you trace ONLY Charles II's ancestry? The words "cousin, uncle niece" come up so often that I gave up trying to trace it.
The lessons here?
Inbreeding bad.
Really bad.
Now, there's this number we call F , which is just fancy math talk for how likely it is you have these alleles on a gene from a common ancestor. (Alleles: Each gene gets one form Dad, one from Mom. The problem is, if Dad is uncle to Mom and also they are second and first cousins, too...) So let's use the old standard ABO blood type. You get the allele for O from Dad and A from Mom. Your GENotype (as in gene) is AO but your PHENotype (how it's expressed) is A. Two As? You're A. Two Os? You're O. O is always recessive in expression, so if it pops up, you got an O allele from each parent, and know their A blood types mask an O allele. Thus I know my parents were AO AO genotypes, and I'm OO.
So F is how likely is it you got whatever allele?
Charles 2 the last Habsburg was so inbred he was more related to himsel fthan if his parents were SIBLINGS.
If your parents have zero common ancestry (which is almost impossible because we all probably carry some oddball alleles from a few thousand years ago)... YAY. You're the least inbred person around.
Now, if you get 0.0625 or 6.25%? Parental relationship is probably about first cousins. (Or second cousins twice over, let's not get into that!)
Charles II's F was calculated at over 25%, which is what happens if your parents were full siblings. Do you iknow what happened for that to happen? Don't ask.
So, when you hate on your ancestors? Check how close they are. My grandparents on one side are fourth cousins, but that's well within the F zone of safety. My dad's F would'ev been probably around 10% or less. And they didn't know they were fourth cousins.
But now you iknow why anything closer than 3d cousins (shared great-great-grandparents) is usually illegal, often discouraged where not illegal, and cringey in general. (My grandparents, btw, well, some surnames are REALLY common.)

And on that note, I leave you to wonder at the vagaries of fate and DNA. He was so inbred it was closer than if hgis parents had been siblings, ffs. EW.

That's just disgusting.
It's overcast and cooler here today, Rain in the forecast later on.
The three feral cats that were neutered arrived back just after 7:00 last night. They did really well. Ate like pigs and one of them was pretty friendly which we've never seen but try to encourage. They've been treated for fleas and dewormed as well. They all appeared this morning for breakfast and look fine. We're going to trap some more in a couple of weeks.
I'm a bit stiff and achy today which is to be expected. I had a weird dream last night too. Driving up a main road which I frequent and a small plane narrowly missed my car and crashed. No idea what that might mean but I'd love a restful sleep just once....
No work today so I'll be attempting to get something done around here. I need to start putting the living room back together. It's still all torn up. I want to shampoo the carpet and do a couple of other things before I start putting furniture back in place. We'll see how far that I get.

My parents don't seem to share any common ancestry (dad is Irish/Scottish ans Swedish; mom is all over the rest of Europe but mostly central/eastern European countries). But their parents...idk. I'm sure everyone has some inbreeding if you go back far enough.
I'm exhausted and it's a gray/ugly day. Leaving after appointments for the dentist appointment, wish me luck with that. My dad's on my ass about it now -_-. He wants me to call and let him know how it goes, and I just don't want to deal with him being him. I'm stressed enough, even if they redo the crown it's still figuring out more time off work etc. Ugh. I wish they would just pull it today for no charge and I could be done with this
