I'm up at oh-crap-early. It allegedly snowed. All it did was cause ache with a dusting of white fluff. Eh. I am unimpressed. And very tired. I'll nap later. I hope.

Adventures in Cat Wrangling yesterday: LilMiss has realized I own cat toys. these are new and baffling to her. She is a cat who preys, not plays. Fortunately, "string under a rug" works wonders to fascinate her. Lowers my BP about ten points,t oo. We've a bamboo mat/area rug, and I brought out the old long long shoelace, tied a tiny knot in one end, hid most of it under the mat, and dragged it a tiny bit at a time. Instant LilMiss joy! She's a good hunter --- as we know from the "gifts" she leaves us --- but she seemed to enjoy the idea of hunting without freezing her tail off. Yes, she just walks into my house every day now. WHatever. I'm too tired to argue. Or chase. Or whatever.

The paper punchboard was patented today in 1905.
What the hell i s a punchboard?
Originally, it was of wood, with holes drilled in it, and each hole held a slip of paper or token that denoted you'd "won" something. The punchboard was a feature at many taverns, and you paid for your chance at it, and you might get a jokey "loser" bit or a free pint of booze or even a bit of cash. It was inexpensive, and popular, until of course people figured out the bar owners weren't letting anyone win the big stuff, and it was cumbersome, and cheating was too easy, and people stopped gambling by betting on their chance at te punchboard.
Then, in the late 1800s, people got the idea to use paper on both sides of the punchboard. This kept the operator "honest", inasmuch such a thing is possible, and you'd pay five cents, take a metal stylus and punch the hole and get your prize (or lack thereof). Basically, it's teh ancestor of the modern scratch-off lottery ticket, and the tickets are more honest, as they've got serial numbers tracking them. Punchboards --- whether in an old drugstore or whatever c. 1900-1950 -- could be more easily tainted without the customer knowing it. In fact, punchboards were used to advertise everything from beer to cigarette lighters in the Depression era, and somet punchboards put out by companies as ads? Held an actual *item* inside. Worth a penny to try, right?
Fans of the TV show "The Price is right" will reocgnize this from the feature "Punch a Bunch". I had to find a pop culture example of this darn thing. Seriously. A punchboard... Wow.
OK, and in other news for this date, the Pro Golfers Association was born, so happy golfing to our resident golf fans!
In 1995, the Kobe, Japan, earthquake hit 7.2 on the Richter scale, killing about 6,000 --- exactly one year after the Northridge, California, US earthquake killed about 60-plus, with a magnitude in the 6.7 range, and causing $2B in damages. To the day. Yeesh.
And in 1945, Warsaw was liberated from Nazis by Soviets. Yeah. Frying pans and fires, y'know?

Blessed day to all.:-)

Lately I've been feeling scared and full of anxiety. I recently found a lump under my nipple. I hurt my back too. I'm in the process of moving. I'm run down. Everything is hard

Well, our drought isn't broken but our gutter is. Got two big storms rigth after each other and, wait for it, a tornado warning. Now, I was already running for my go-bag when I heard thunder. The air felt wrong. The sky was getting a color to the west. Been there, lived that, time to hide.No funnel touched down but the radar indicated rotation, and boy was it visible from the ground. Different...

Aw, Lilmiss, the savage hunter, cutely playing like a kitten.... funny how this can lower bp, ease depression & anxiety! Hershey is a good hunter for only having a little bit of vision in her one eye. When we lived on Oahu, we lived on the deserty-ish side of the island, Spike was the mouser, scorpionist, and centipede champion. He and Hershey were good at guarding the house from all intruders lol.
I didn't sleep well, thanks to hubby flopping around like a fish. I did get another round of botox shots yesterday. Extra was given in the back of my head and shoulders... he said I have a lot of tension in those areas. The nurse saw me about my ribs and scheduled an appt with my PCP for Friday. I really don't know what good it will do since there isn't anything you can do for injured ribs. I guess I just wanted some validation from the VA because I'm sick of them ignoring me while I hurt.
I have PTSD therapy today, the 1st in over a month. Also.... I'm wondering if I should cancel horse therapy tomorrow..... grooming the horse bothered my ribs so much last week and the next day I was so sore I didn't want to move too much. Unless I just don't do any grooming? I'll text the horse trainer and see what she thinks.
Wonder, laser pointers are a failure in this house. Silver just looks at me like I'm stupid and Hershey can't see it. I haven't tried it with Spike, though, but he's hard to play with because he's so shy. The only "toy" he'll come out for is catnip lol.
Kel, ha ha ha! That's tempting.... I'll have to think it over ;-P
Back in a minute.
Blue, it's okay to go easy on ribs. Bruised or broken or just plain "out of place" like mine was a while back, it's all that is really going to ease pain over time, with breathing exercises and stuff....
Would answer all, but am literally falling asleep at the keyboard. Peace to all:-)
Omg, Ida. What a pain to end the trip that way, literally. I hope you both are resting well today and feel better tomorrow.
Lilmissy, sorry for your pain and hope it calms down. Green tea is a part of my morning routine.
Miki, whoohoo for having time off + self beautification!
Holy guacamole.... I'm trying to read here and type up responses and mom walks in and starts rambling to me about Luther's writings (the theologian), the Protestant movement, women equality, Jews and Hitler. Seriously? 1st thing in the morning and THAT's what's on your mind?? Ugh
Snow, in Charlotte, Susan?! Bazar. A fellow Marine I served with who lives in Houston posted online that they have a winter weather alert. Really? Down in Texas! Wow! So..... are we coming into another ice age??
Kel, I'm glad the Timberwolves will get to remind you of some good times you cherish with your father.
PuppyM, sorry about Yippy, I hope it's nothing serious and he recovers well. I love big cats! Silver used to be 15 for years till recently when he's decided to pick at his food for the past year.... has lost weight down to 12.5 lbs now. The vets aren't concerned since his blood work looks fine. I hope one day to have a maincoon.
Wonder, lol..... I don't see anything wrong with being EXTRA ready for the move.
Oh no, Twins. Scary. And you don't need anymore issues! I hope you have called them to get seen asap. Poor thing.
I made it home okay and got here just in time. It’s still coming down hard and looks bad out there. I’ll probably be home until Friday. I don’t know, Twin, you might want to move further south than NC. I didn’t sign up for all this snow when I moved here. :)
Blue, sorry you didn't get any sleep.
Susan, good point, I hate the cold. LOL I'm glad you made it home safe.
You'll all be happy to know I called the doctor but I'm waiting for them to call me back.
Susan, enjoy your day home. I hope you stay warm, relax and do some self pampering. Yes, I heard Maine Coons are special cats which is why I want one :). I hope it's not hard to get here in Maui. It can be a little isolating out here and difficult to get things.
Twins, awesome for calling the doc. Hope they get back to you soon!
I am having a crap load of pain from head to toe from going out in the world for an appt and errands yesterday and I didnt even drive. It was cold out there.
My friend gave me a gift certificate for xmas to a local place that makes yummy homemade food (not a chain restaurant) that delivers , so I ordered that for dinner. We are getting our haircuts close by tonight - so overdue. Seems like a theme here today - getting haircuts.
I finally ordered a cheaper TV last night for my bedroom for when I rest in there. I got rid of cable recently and my TV was my Moms, an old kind of TV (about 14 years old) with no HDMI ports and nondigital, no place to put in an Amazon fire stick .
Blue - I wrote this before , but I am not sure if you saw it. A person can break their ribs from coughing , like when you were recently ill. I know this because it happened to me and I thought my costochondritis was just flared after being sick , but nope 3 broken ribs. Maybe you are in need of complete rib xrays? Is that a VA medical thing , the nurse decides if you need to see the Dr? I wouldnt like that at all.
I am off to take a hot shower and hopefully it will ease some of this pain.
Stay warm everyone.
The nurse tried to tell me my ribs were fine just by talking to me. But I told her I was coughing pretty violently during most of my travels on vacation... and I didn't do much resting. I pushed and pushed going here and there, we had 5 destinations to fly to, even climbed up ancient temples. That's actually when I noticed my rib pain became severe and from that point on I had trouble doing the most basic things like sitting up in bed, getting dressed, or going to the bathroom without help from hubby. I told her we had to fly home because I couldn't function due to pain being a 9 out of 10. She was like, "Oh.... if you weren't laying in bed while sick and you were THAT active on top of coughing, then yeah, it's possible you injured yourself." DUH, lady!
milily, enjoy your haircut, dinner, and hot shower. I hope your pain decreases.
