I've has this pain in the kidney area for 2 freakin months now!
a month ago a was in the Tripler Army Hospital ER for this pain and they did a urine test for a UTI, it was negative. they said they could give me a lung Xray or just treat the pain. I got pissed so i chose to go home.
2 weeks ago my primary doc gave me a CT scan of my kidney looking for a stone, didn't find any, but found that my kidney was thinning. my PCM didn't know what the CT scan results meant and said it's probably normal and not to worry about it.
so yesterday i woke up and the pain was still there and the it was getting on my nerves pretty bad. just out of curiosity i went on the net and looked up what thinning of the kidney could mean and it said it's a sign that the kidney is decreasing it;s function and leading to failure.
couldn't get a hold of my PCM all day which lead to my trip to Queens ER.
they did a whole panel on blood work and screened my urine for protein. After 4-5 hrs of waiting the results came back and they said everything was normal. the doc said he didn't understand and it was a bit mysterious. he said it was a problem because he didn't have access to the CT scan so he couldn't see it.
but he also said my kidney could be healthy and it just was thinned from all the kidney infections I've had over the last 7 yrs.
worse comes to worse, he said, they are seeing results of my OTHER kidney and this one really has stopped. but he thinks I'm ok.
but if it is healthy, then why have i had pain for 2 months??
ok.... so i was thinking, based on the CT scan showing a thinning kidney, should i ask to see a nephrologist anyway and get a strait story on what's going on here (despite the good panels)? what would you do if this were you?

should i try a urologist? those guys have pissed me off in the past, though. but i guess i could ask and maybe they have good people now. last 3 times i had an appt with them some years ago, they never called me or sent me anything in the mail that said i had an appt so i kept missing them and getting kicked back to my primary care as a "no show". maybe my doc can refer me to a different office.
You said "they are seeing results of my OTHER kidney and this one really has stopped". That's why I don't understand why you aren't already being monitored by a Nephrologist.
I would see a different nephrologist then the one you already seen there is good ones and bad ones like in all fields... I hope you find out what is going on and can get this fixed soon. Sorry your going through all this and hope things get better soon.

but Queens hasn't been following my kidney issues over the years... the VA has. and i"m steaming pissed at them that they haven't already sent me to one. i was so mad i was shaking all day yesterday.
i saw a nephrologist about 2 years ago and he said that as long as antibiotics work every time i get an infection, i'll be fine. and then sent me back to my PCM.
i feel like problem is that i need to see a urologist or a nephrologist OUT SIDE of the VA / military hospital.
i don't know. just talking to you here is helping me. I'm gonna storm into my doc's office Monday morning and demand to see one, and request that they send me out side of the VA.
who knows maybe my kidney IS actually ok, but maybe it's not. i just want to see someone that knows what the hell they're talkin about!
saw one of those asshole urologists 4 yrs ago and their theory was that maybe i had urine leaking back into my L kidney while i was sleeping at night, possibly causing the chronic infections. i was supposed to come back for more testing but that's when the problems with the scheduling started. they kept scheduling me on dates with out my knowledge and kicking me back to my primary care as a "no show".
and then 2 years ago during a new referral to urology they didn't want to deal with me and sent me to nephrology who are the ones that said as long as the anitbiotics work i'll be fine.
this is why i think i need to be sent out side of the VA system. they can all kiss my ass! they treat us like cattle, just shoving us back on other doctors. i guess they don't care if veterans could be losing their kidneys, as long THEY don't have to deal with it
so i could be having pain that's not connected to the kidney infections or the thinning of the kidney?
how on earth did they figure that out??
If it were me, I would go see a specialist and get a strait answer! There is nothing like peace of mind to heal your mind, body, and soul.

I am jumping in here because I just found out three weeks ago that I have Chronic Kidney Disease. In my case it was due to unknowingly living in a toxic atmosphere with Black Mold for 6 years. Black Mold can kill you, and it almost killed me due to a uti that turned septic with e-coli after my doctor missed it. The only symptom I had was a funny taste in my mouth and then suddenly a high fever and extreme back and head pain. I was hospitalized and peeing dark brown for the five days they had me on intravenous antibiotics. I was hours from death and I knew it. The capillaries in my hands and feet started to die since they were the furthest from my heart. Now I have a doozie of a case of Raynaud's Disease and can't feel the bottom half of my toes and my hands and feet are cold even in 90 degree weather. I have dead nerves running all the way up to my waist. I also got a case of Epstein-Barr Virus while I was in the hospital to top everything off.
I have aged considerably from the Black Mold issue. Now I only get a thin stream when I pee.
All this to say: Just because the doctors can't find anything doesn't mean there's not something wrong. Go to a specialist. Find out if it is your kidneys or perhaps another organ that they are missing. Go to a second specialist, don't give up until you find the source of the pain. We've all heard horror stories where people were desperately ill and doctors would send them home time after time and say nothing was wrong. Finally, when they were near death, it finally was discovered what was the cause of the illness. Don't let the doctors tell you nothing is wrong and act like you've done something wrong. You are the one who knows best. If you are in pain, then something is wrong. Keep at it until you find the answer to your pain. Chin up and forge ahead.

my blood and urine didn't show anything. that's why the ER doc was puzzled. and my blood pressure has been very low lately. always in the 90s over 50s.
actually in the ER it was 117 / 74 which is higher then than the usual.
but i think i will see a specialist anyways cuz i don't want anything important to be shoved under a rug!
