Update on my dog

For those of you who read my comment on the check in yesterday, this is how things played out. My dad brought her to work for me yesterday and the doctor couldn't look in her mouth either, so I brought her back this morning for a sedated oral exam. She had several upper incisors that were broken and infected, which was most likely the cause of her pain. The incisors are the small teeth between the canine teeth. All of them were broken or worn (most of them were like that when I got her but haven't bothered her until yesterday) so we ended up extracting all 12. Best guess is that some had pulp exposure which not only hurts, but leads to disease and death of the teeth. I also cleaned and polished the rest of her teeth, and drew some blood to send out-it should be fine, she's only 2 or 3, but good to check. All of this stuff sounds horrendous but we do it several times a week so other than it being my own dog it's pretty routine for me. She's sleeping off the anesthesia now and with pain meds on board for the next few days she'll be feeling much better.  Thanks to everyone who sent good thoughts our way!

Poor Puppy. Will she have to eat soft food forever? What about bone chewing ? If my dog couldnt chew her bones she would go insane. I hope her recovery goes well - her mouth will probably be sore for a while.

Thanks all. She'll have to eat soft food and avoid chew toys for a few days, which isn't a big deal, she's not a crazy chewer. However, now we've got a new hurdle to get over...the blood work I sent out came back and she's actually heartworm positive:( it's really common down south, which is where she's from. She was tested at the end of September and it was negative, but the twst only picks yp on adult worms; it takes 3-4 months for the larvae to mature and make their way to the heart. So this is literally the earliest we could have caught it. Unfortunately heartworm treatment isn't simple-its a series of painful deep intramuscular injections, and she'll need to he on strict cage rest because the dying worms can actually form an embolism if they're too active, which can kill her. So we're going to have a rough month...but I guess if there's a positive side to any of this, it's that the broken teeth led to running the heartworm test and catching it early, before she's symptomatic. Once she's treated she shouldn't have any lasting damage to her heart. And now that I've basically given a lesson on heartworm, I need to go crash. I basically had a breakdown the second I got in my car and I'm praying to a god I don't believe in that I won't have to deal with a flare on top of all this. Just gonna cuddle with the pup for the rest of the night.

Oh my Miki26 so sorry you are going through all of that with your fur baby :( Many years ago where we use to live our neighbors put out their dog :( We took her in. She was only around a year old and had heartworms. We had her treated and she lived to be almost 15 years old. That's old for a (part) Lab. She even had some heart and other damage from the heartworms but still managed a long life so fingers crossed your fur baby comes through the treatments as I remember they are rough but keeping her quiet hopefully she comes through it just fine!

Once we get this under control she'll be great, I just feel bad that she needs to go through this because of someone else's carelessness (she was found under a house with a litter of puppies in Mississippi). She's going to get the care she needs though, my pets are like my kids
