Nope, no traumatic event. Just a case of viral pneumonia.

In my case it was ongoing high levels of stress coupled with a disc failure in my lower back.

A rheumy asked me if I started having pain after my father died. I said, "No, after I had burnt myself to crisp in the sun." That is why the fibro was supposed to be secondary.

Mine started shortly after a 9 month saga of GI problems...very stressful mentally and physically, but probably not traumatic. They say it can be after an illness/injury or nothing at all.

That is not necessarily true that Fibro follows a traumatic event. It can also come after a bout of the flu, Being in a fender bender, which doesn't have to be traumatic, and many other reasons. Hugs GB

Thanks for sharing! I was just curious. I can certainly see how a traumatic event COULD be the precipitating event. Just wondered about how many of us experienced that.

No traumatic event. Just started having patches of painful areas bilaterally on hips and knees that didn't go away.

I think the medical literature says that FM is often (sometimes) follows a traumatic event, or even occurs more often in women who have had horrendous childhoods full of abuse. These events prime the nervous system, so to speak, to change the way pain signals are processed.

I had traumatic events as a child and also later. So, mine could have started from a traumatic event, since I feel like I've had fibromyalgia most of my life.

Mine was triggered by spinal injury in neck and three cervical fusions.

It is not unusual for fibromyalgia to develop after an injury or acute stress. Do not know the exact ratio. I do know my flared up after a knee injury and knee surgery. Does not make the pain any less if preceded by a stress factor or not. I am also aware that some doctors will try to finger point a stress factors then diminish the symptoms as stress related not fibromyalgia. For me I will take what information I can find and process it to take what information I can relate to and leave the rest behind. Hop you will find ways to deal with the pain and have supportive doctors and friends.

I believe mine started in my childhood. Not from any abuse (except for bare bottom spankings for misbehavior), but more from my emotional state. I was insecure, felt ugly, was afraid to try things like sports, I held back a lot. When later I became a massage therapist specializing in emotional release, chronic pain, injury rehab, I realized that all that "holding back" was resulting in my body getting fatigued and tight. In order to hold back, the body physically and energetically tightens down, also the case in stuffing in emotions and feelings. So our fascial web tightens. Anyway, long history of bad toxic relationships, lack of confidence, resentment, anger led to problems over the years: epstein barr syndrome, mononucleosis, chronic fatigue, depression. Later after those were all gone, but still with my same old patterns and behaviors, the pain started. Then thru 10 yrs of high stress, anxiety, and grief, the pain started to increase. For me, I know without doubt my emotional state and not listening to my body and intuition were the building blocks of all my pain-emotional and physical pain. It's been a journey of loving and nurturing myself, increasing my pleasurable experiences, decreasing my stress-full experiences, along with self-myofascial release to overcome the fibro.

I also want to add to my reply that with 20 years of being a massage and myofascial release therapist specializing in emotional release and chronic pain (how about the irony of my profession--lol), I can say first-hand that most chronic pain results from stuffed in emotions and from trauma that the body has not released. It's a build up of tension over time, and it's from not listening to our bodies. There's a saying that goes "the issues are in the tissues," by John Barnes, PT. (super tight fascia compresses on everything, including the delicate nervous system) It's like when you go and go and go, then you get a cold. Your body gives you a cold so that you slow down and rest. For us with Fibro, I see a lot of women go and go and go, no time for themselves, no nurturing, just all stress. I'll bet most of us had some signs beforehand that we ignored. I did. Then the body can't take anymore, and it gets really dis-eased and finally hits you hard to make you stop and listen. Just my experience and seeing tons of clients.
