too many doctors..no one accountable

Just had to vent!  I have had 4 doctors in 2 years..They keep moving away..and each subsequent doctor has changed my meds.  I finally in frustration went off all and asked to try naltrexone.  Doctor #4 said must go to fibro clinic to get it.  Waited 4 months to get in.  Dr. #5 says doctor number 4 could give it to me and listed how to administer it  (Frustrated)  So went back to doctor #4 and she said working on it worried about lack of long term risks..no studies yet.  But would check into it.  Waited 2 more weeks..contact #4 and she says in short email..can't prescribe because it is a narcotic  go back to doctor#5.


This is a bunch of #@!#.   And while at fibro clinic had to retake the wonderful 8 hour intro class all over again..Diagnosed 8 years ago!  Then they said whatever you do don't go to online support groups!  I was sooo mad I said if you all hadn't been there for me when first diagnosed I would have killed myself!  They do have their place!  I appreciate all of you!

Any doctor that has a DEA number and a license to prescribe a Controlled Dangerous Substance can prescribe a Schedule II. It is extremely rare for a doctor that is practicing to not be able to prescribe Schedule II meds. Your doctor is lying to you. Naltrexone is often used to treat opiate abuse. Because of this some doctors won't prescribe it. You need to find a new doctor.

I also asked my general doctor about Naltrexone and she just looked at me in horror and said that's a drug they give to drug addicts. I told her I know that but this would be low-dose Naltrexone. She said I would have to go to a pain clinic for that. Which I haven't done yet, but the Lyrica is helping thank goodness. I understand the frustration though. I don't understand why all of this is so hard for doctors to understand. I hope you find someone who can help you.

Sounds frustrating. If you're talking about low-dose naltrexone, there have been only one or two studies with just a few patients. But anyway, most docs won't be aware of this. The drug has to be compounded by a compounding pharmacy, because it isn't commercially available in the 3-4.5mg dosage.
Why not print out some good scienfic info about Jared Younger's low-dose naltrexone trial and give to your doc to read. That's what I've had to do over the years (with fibro) to get a drug that I wanted to try.

You have to continue the fight until you are heard. Most clinics have a patient support and you can report the problem with them. They work on your behalf to solve problems patients are having with their doctors. If that doesn't work I don't know where you should go but please don't lose hope. I am praying for you.

Not any doctor can prescribe narcotics. Here in michigan Very few either can or will, and you have to sign a narcotic agreement that you will not get any from anywhere else as a script. Its one thing if the hospital gives you a shot or a pill or 2 to go home with you but they can not give you a script. Also my shrink had to talk to my neurologist before he could even put me on klonopin because of this. My PCP who is internal medicine, before ever seeing me (been going to her 14 months now) Made sure i knew she would never give me anything controlled. WIth all the laws i dont blame doctors for being so hard to get them from but at the same time it makes it hard for those of use who really need them, i am very grateful i have my neurologist! I hope you get something to help, im on oxycodone and still get very little relief and i have fibro bad but its not even my main pain issue but it does control what i can do a lot of the time.

Thanks for the kind words and support! I have found a few doctors in the state that do prescribe naltrexone..will be checking to see if they are seeing patients and how expensive. I will keep you updated if I find any success.

    I'nm exhausted. This doxycycline thing has ripped me apart and I'm eating crackers  and water. I can't take (anything) or eat (anything) except saltines and toast and maybe unbuttered watery mashed potatoes. Are we sure the cure isn't worse than the possible disease?!?!And a week to go. ***Fun cures that WERE worse than the disease:ARsenic. Popular against STDs, which just compounded misery...
