I had some weird ass dreams last night...I take Amitriptyline for fibro/sleep and I have fewer side effects to this than most other meds, but one is incredibly vivid dreams. Sometimes I remember some/most of them, usually not. They tend to be more like nightmares, with a recurring theme of being chased down or hunted, so honestly I'm fine not remembering.
But why do we dream? The short answer is, who the hell knows. There have been many studies and theories but at the end of the day, there's a whole lot we don't know about how/why the brain does what it does.
The prevailing theory is that dreams help you process memories, skills and habits, and is kind of a way to "rehearse" situations or challenges you face. Obviously, the brain takes some artistic liberty with that part.
On a physiological level, we know a fair amount of what's happening in the brain while we're dreaming. Dreams occur during REM sleep (REM=rapid eye movement, a cycle of deep sleep where our eyes move back and forth really fast); brain waves are almost as active at this time as they are when we're awake. The experts think the brain stem affects sleep cycles and dreams originate in the forebrain, which is the part that processes conscious thoughts/perception, among other things. They've found that people with brain stem injury don't go into REM sleep and people with forebrain injury don't dream. This is still conjecture and other studies have shown that they might originate from imagination (which is drawn from several areas of the brain), than perception. So basically we're back to, who the hell knows.
We do know that dreams can be affected by psychiatric conditions like PTSD. Many of us know these nightmares, which are common when you're more stressed or triggered.
As for why dreams can be so effing weird, it gets complicated. The experts suspect neurotransmitters are involved, since some are more pronounced or suppressed during different sleep cycles. Acetylcholine (maintains brain activation) and dopamine (can be linked to hallucinations) are present in higher levels during REM sleep, while histamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine are suppressed-those keep us awake and aware of our surroundings. Personally I don't know about this...I usually have the TV on overnight because I can't sleep in silence and can't get the radio stations I like here, and my dreams have involved characters in shows I know were on while I was sleeping that night. But, less awareness of the environment around us doesn't necessarily mean *no* awareness.
You can find a ton of info online about interpretation of dreams and "what they mean". Most of it is BS. Freud had a lot to say about dreams and he was the first to publicly talk about their interpretation in the 50s, but no studies have ever substantiated what he said. This is further complicated by the fact that we don't always remember dreams at all,or just bits and pieces-basically you only remember them if you wake up during or right after. Even people who "never dream", actually do, they just don't remember.
With that, I need to get ready for a run...it's gotten cold (it's 25 degrees and we have a "wintry mix" coming overnight, ugh) and my motivation is lacking. Miki is perfectly emulating my mood right now, in what I call the "cattleball"

And I'll add this one of Noah in one of his favorite sleeping positions...don't ask me how he breathes like this because I don't know.

And now I'm off to wish I could give myself a coffee IV...which is to say I technically could since I know how to place a catheter and all, but the coffee would probably melt the IV tubing..

We're all troubled.WSo, to remind ourselves we're not at rock bottom (this is a reverse optimism thing I learned as a kid):We are not living on the island of Krakatoa when the volcano goes boom!Yeah, okay, that sucks.***Toay in 1942, Pierre Laval announced that the way to free France was for Germany to win WW2. Pierre did not win a lot of friends. When the war ended, quite quickly he was tried...

Another day, another ouchie? My bruised achilles tendon (don't ask) makes my foot numb. Wonky on meds, whacked it.Now, as to fibro:A lot of reports are going around some parts of social media that fibro (and dang near anything else) are caused by post-Covid, post-flu, post-vaccinations, post-pick-something.1. Your risk of death or serious complications beyond "ow, that shot hurt!" are typically...

I don't remember my dreams much. Motley runs and sniffs in her dreams much as she does when she is awake. Clayton whimpers and flinches like he's being beaten, we wake him when that starts because it's clearly a nightmare.
Thanks for taking point on check-ins you've done a great job.
Heading into work. Shaking and sweating have stopped at least. Never did have a fever when I checked. Have some things that must get done today.
Dreams are something that I am well versed in. As you were saying, Miki, triggers for my PTSD cause me bad nightmares, but most of the time my dreams are so strange that they are funny, and remember them very well. When I had a sleep study done, the doctor told me I was the grand champion of dreaming. I dream more than any patient he ever had. Even if I take a 10 minute snooze, I dream during the day.
Last night I dreamed my daughter-in-law had a baby girl and they named her Maria Natalie. The baby happened to be Native and Black. Now in real life my husband’s brother and his wife could not have children, and they adopted a 7 year old girl who is Native American and Black. How I mixed that all together, I have no idea. My niece is now 24 with 3 kids, so this was not something new. Dreams are just weird, is all I can say.
I hope the coffee wakes you up.
Puppymom, it sounds like we both enjoyed our coffee this morning. I don’t think Brewer dreams a lot. But when he does, it seems like happy dreams. His little legs kind of move like he’s found a squirrel to chase or something. And he makes cute little sounds.
Glad you are feeling better.
My right leg is still causing pain. Everything else is pretty good. I still have puffy bruises on my legs. I can take a few steps this morning, but my right leg starts to hurt. My GP’s nurse told me to take a few steps here and there, and sit back down and rest. I have to take it slowly. No MRI quite yet. It’s a bit too soon.
Just being my usual lazy self today. I think I need some Christmas music today. It’s snowing like crazy.
Love to all.
Interesting info on dreams. The human brain is so mysterious in how the combinations of chemicals, electrical neurons, and psychological components all are connected to create the mind that we have and the physical funtions.
And nobody can explain prophetic dreams, which I have had throughout my life. When I was little, after my mom had her 3rd child the doctors told her she couldn't have any more children due to medical complications. But several years later I started having many dreams that she got pregnant and had a little boy. She laughed me off, but then she did get pregnant. The doctors told her she was having a girl and came up with girl names, but I told her it was a boy so they'd better come up with some boy names. When she gave birth to my baby brother she was shocked.
I've been trying to get my new neurologist to fill my Rx for the emgality migraine shot since last week, but the guy doesn't seem to call back. So today ill be ringing his phone off the hook. Otherwise, I am baking a coconut rum cake, heavy on the rum LOL. And my BF is learning how to make blueberry pie today. The church is having a dessert auction this weekend so we are practicing our baking skills lol. Tonight I'm cooking Ukrainian borscht for dinner.
Merry, is all this pain from the bone density test? Is your bone bruised? I feel bad for you and I pray you heal up.
Puppy, so glad you are feeling better. That shaking sounded awful.
Hi Fantod. DS had the munchies apparently. Hope today is going well. I haven’t been online hardly at all today. Working on Christmas cards.
