Also, I use SARNA lotion [OTC] for the milder episodes and I do get some relief from it. I've recommended it to others, and it has helped them for the less severe.
Hope this will help. Check side effects of the atarax. It does help me sleep [ one side effect] when these times are so severe. I note the itching to be worst in the colder months and as you noted, it's not " dry skin".
I still have some trouble with itching - it's a side effect of some meds and my skin tends to be dry this time of year anyway - but at least I can scratch without intense pain so that's an improvement.
My friend is the lotion applicator with handle. Gets all the places my short arms don't reach! lol I got mine at the tanning salon for about $10.
Stay healthy and gentle hugs.

It's just a thought, but I've had some luck with tea tree oil. I mix it 50-50 with jojoba oil and use it, sparingly, on my entire body after every shower. The oils go a long way. It probably runs me $20 every 3 months to keep it going and I'm a giant. I think the benefits are well worth the cost.
I'm having way less itchiness these days and quite a few skin discolorations (that I just assumed were age-related) have faded or disappeared. I love not having ugly, purply legs.
I also used to get little sores on my arms - sometimes they itched. Hardly worth mentioning except that it was constant and leaving discolored spots behind. Those have also disappeared and my arms are nice and smooth again.
