They have to rule out a lot of other things before diagnosing fibromyalgia officially. Fibromyalgia mimics other things like Lupus, Lyme disease, and MS and others. Those have to be ruled out, the tender point test, and a medical history, your symptoms, family medical history.. All that is combined to make a diagnosis.
My Rheumatologist's first diagnosis for me was that I have hyper-mobility syndrome which is quite commonly found in people that have FM. Not sure if the hyper-mobility is a cause or an overlapping symptom.
When he examined me I asked my doctor how much pain should I have in the pressure points as he was pressing them - I asked this cause I felt like I should not say it hurts if it isn't excruciating but he told me that any pain or tenderness counts. My pressure points were worse in some spots than others - like a sore muscle - but I had this for so long I thought that it was normal. However I knew which ones hurt terribly however because I have noticed them being painful just at home while lying in bed.
I also kept a journal of my symptoms for the last year and he took a copy of that.
God bless, I hope you find your answers.
