Dahlia: 11. Skinks: extinct. And stinky. I found one in rigor mortis in my kitchen this morning, promptly dropped my glass of water, and that's my morning.

Today in 1680, the Pueblo Indians drove the Spanish out of their area and took possession (back) of Santa Fe, in what is now New Mexico. After chasing out two thousand or so settlers, and 400 or so legit Spaniards, the Pueblos thus ended persecution and slavery AND the Spanish didn't stick their noses there agtain for twelve years. This formed the first Pueblo Republic, btw.
The 1692 return of Spain went so well that another revolt took place. The Spaniards killed the men and sold women and children as slaves. Things didn't settle down till the priests chilled out and the Pueblos also fled to jion either the Apache confederation or the Navajo, where many are to this day. BUT thanks to the revolts, and the preedents of the Spanish, the Pueblo maintained more of their culture than was typical for conquered natives.
Interestingly, on the same day but in 1831, Nat Turner led a rebellion of slaves in Virginia. That... went much worse. The revolt led to increased strictures on any people of color, even if they were 1/64th not-white, or eevn rumored to be 1/10000000th not-whitel. the "one-drop" rule was financial exploitation at its heart, since they could then enslave anyone with a rumor. This led to many people o fnon-African ancestry being enslaved, and while nobody remembers that, in the Nat Turner era you could still end up accused and "bonded". Don 't get a dark tan. Don't tan at all, in fact. Don't have btrown eyhes or black hair. In fact, just hope you look like Elsa from Frozen. While few peopple overall were "netted" into slavery by this rule, it did happen, and I brin gi tup to point out this:
Nat Turner's rebellion included people of African origin who were not slaves. But to give you an idea how Anglos dealt with it? After his execution in November, Turner's body was used as a medical specimen and souvenir purses were made from his skin. That one's not embellished. Saw one in a small local museum in SE Virginia. After Turner, whose wife was tortured and whose son was put up as debt collateral, regulations agianst Africans or those of African ancestry increased across the US South specifically. Nat Turner's rebellion would inspire abolitionists like John Brown.
TLDR: Be realllllly white in any society in North America or Europe if you pull a time travel, and don't even think of going elsewhere.... Really don't. you'd be described as "dark like a(n African)" just for having a suntain and black hair and dark eyes. This is why it was better to lie and say you were ANYthing but that.
Interestingly, Turner was nick anmed The Preacher among other slavews, and his preachints as we know them fit into the general revivalist apocalyptic religiosity of the decade. This was "The Second Great Awakening", which saw the massive spread of Baptists, Methodists, and Mormons. \

Have a lovely day, I have to air out Mortified Skink from my house. *sigh*

I watched a great video on YouTube this morning. I think the speaker's name is Tim Fletcher. It was about feeling unheard as a child. I distinctly remember sitting at the kitchen table with my family, everyone talking, no one listening. I just kept quiet and ate. I have had a feeling of being unheard for some parts of my life, with some people. I have had some fabulous friends over...

What were your five favorite subjects in school?

I'm exhausted and my anxiety is through the roof. I have my transvaginal ultrasound Tuesday, which is enough said. Then Miki's surgery is Thursday and I'm worried about getting the whole thing off. It's not small, and mast cell tumors are like an octopus-they have tendrils that spread, except you can't actually see them. When they come off, you need to remove a lot of skin around the mass to ensure you get it all. Not easy in a lot of areas because you need enough skin left to close the incision. And if this is an aggressive tumor, I don't even want to consider it, but it's a possibility. It's been warmer and humid, which is not great when I have pms and already can't sleep well. I really wish I could punch out and take a nap...
I've unpacked all of my stuff and have some laundry working. I have to head back out shortly. Tomorrow is going to be busy too.
It's very humid here which I hate. I got home to find all of the ceiling fans turned off. I turned them all back on. This has been a rough summer with the heat and humidity. We are supposed to get rain tomorrow. I sure hope so, we need it.
Leo - Thank you for the interesting check in. I own a Civil War era abolitionist button. A terrible institution.
Miki - I can understand why your anxiety is so bad. That's two major things to manage. I sure hope that Miki's mast cell tumor is not aggressive. Hoping that you get some solid rest this weekend. Hugs!
That's it for me. Waves!
Fan, yeah. My an cestor (well one) was an abolitionist judge and the family decayed fro there, alas, but he was fierce. So were his kids till they died in Andersonville.
