I keep reading about the swelling around the ribs and sternum associated with fibro. Is this a swelling on the inside of our bodies or the outside? I can never SEE any swelling, but I've been told many times that I have Costochondritis.

Fibromyalgia is very difficult to diagnose. The main reason for this is because the symptoms of fibromyalgia are often in line with the symptoms of other illnesses, which leads to the individual being misdiagnosed. One of the most basic symptoms of fibromyalgia is swelling and inflammation. Due to this fibromyalgia swelling, it can sometimes be confused with arthritis. This is due to the fact that both fibromyalgia and arthritis affect the joints.
Back in the summer of 2012 I noticed a small-ish lump forming on my lower right inner calf. I monitored it for a few weeks when suddenly one day it was the size of half of a baseball! I went to the ER and they couldn't find anything other than swelling. I went to my primary doc who ordered an ultrasound to make sure there wasn't a blood clot and all was clear. There isn't a solid reason behind this swelling and I still have it to this day.
It's noticeable and it changes size slightly every other day. Sometimes it triggers a pain from touching a nerve so then I get shooting pains running up into my thigh which causes anxiety which causes more pain. It's a terrible cycle!
My rheumy tested for inflammation and I don't have any in my body, yet this swelling remains. No one can figure it out so I'm blaming it on fibro.
