Curretnly, most hand sanitizers are using ETHANOL (drinking booze) at 80% (160 proof), with a lot of fragrance, and that has its hazards. (I noted on the weekend check-in that ethanol helps substances penetrate skin deeper, whcih is good if it's healthy, bad if you're sensitive!)
I'm currently using the last of my 91% IPA (rubbing alcohol abbreviation, sorr not to explain) to make up a last little batch of hand sanitizer. Dilutions and solutions and chem nerd stuff, but it beats the "perfumed moonshine" risks.
That said, 160 proof is not the ideal for ethyl alcohol, and if you can get even 60 % IPA? Good. Note: Containers that say "Alcohol" right now may contain combinations of alcohols, and who knows what, so... buyer beware.)
YES IPA WORKS, best at concentrations of 70=90%. You want it to not dehydrate too quickly (thus i mix mine with distilled water) to give it time to break down the (biochem nerd babble), but even 90% will work well.
My preferred recipe at home is:
1 part aloe vera gel, pure
1 part distilled awter (DISTILLED!)
2 parts rubbing alcohol
1 drop of lemon or tea tree oil for scent and for additional anti-ick properties
So far so good:-)
I saw some hand sanitizer sold at Safeway, made by some distillery. They were very liquidity (like water)! Weird! I didn't buy it .
