I recently purchased a memory foam mattress and any other issues are, for me, far outweighed by the improvement in my sleep.
My long term solution (that obviously won't work for everyone) is using 2 pillows. Underneath is a king sized ordinary poly-fiber filled one, and on top of it is a standard sized very dense down filled one.
The bottom one provides enough height, and the top one I mold to support my neck so I can sleep on my side. I keep the pillows just above my shoulders. Ah, very comfy. And low tech.
My pillow is memory foam, as well as my new mattress, but it's not for everyone. As in everything else, we have to find what works for us.
That's part of what I love here - the ability to have the benefit of so many different people's experience!
Don't buy cheap for the bed, your bed life is most of your life when you've got fibro!
Issue is that the technogel anatomical pillow does not really stay cool that long. Although I do like the shape. i wonder if I could reproduce the shape with my old down pillow by bunching it at the neck. Anyway, it's awfully expensive and there are gel versions out there that are about a fifth or a sixth as expensive (Costco has one).
Still don't know what to do. But I think the cervical pillow might be worth it
And it has been an absolute lifesaver, along with my comfy chair, and pain med. I also have the petite version for when I travel, although the petite one isnt nearly as comfy as the big one (even though I am small). These are good for sleeping on your side. If you sleep on your back, you might want the pillows with the neck support. I think this stuff is a good investment as, like Abots said, we spend so much time in our bed.
Augusta, I like the skinny pillow idea.
The memory foam is useful for "normal" sleeping. It has rounded edges on one side (one edge higher than the other) and is flat on the other side (one edge higher than the other). That gives me 4 options to get comfortable.
The down-alternative pillow is for when I get really sore in my neck. I lay on my back and the pillow is nearly flat to the bed, but offers support and cushion. Throw an ice pack under there and I generally feel some better.
I also use the extra pillow to support and arm or leg when I sleep on my side.
Thanks for posting this! I am still looking for the "perfect pillow."
I have sclerosis in my neck, I had surgery on my C5 and C6 in 2010, and I have sleep apnea so I save to wear a full mask at night. I can't have to soft a pillow because it interferes with the mask , it will push it out of alignment with my face . Too firm a pillow hurts my neck.
My neighbor also has fibo and has had it for many years. She asked for the "my pillow" that is advertised on TV for Christmas from her family. She loves it, said it is wonderful. I looked it up on line and they run around $100.00.
I wanted to pass on another pillow for someone to look at, that has been recommended to me by someone else with fibro.
I also use a pillow between my knees and one to support my arm (I sleep on my side). It seems with each new surgery or ailment, I added another pillow...lol!
Pillows are SO important. No longer can I sleep on the 2 pack for $5 from Wal Mart any more.
I just bought an Iso-Cool pillow for side sleepers-cost $29.99.
The pillow stays pretty cool...wears off during the night I think, but I haven't woken up with sweats since I bought it 3 weeks ago. It is not memory foam, but it is a fairly firm pillow and it has a special venting kind of system instead of gel...If you look up Iso-Pillow, there are diagrams and videos about how it absorbs heat and cools. It's pretty scientific for a pillow!
