Niaspan for Cholestrol Help Please!!!!

I have been told by my doctor that I need to go on cholestrol lowering drugs. One of the bad side effects of most of the drugs in muscle pain and severe fatigue. I have read in detail about many of them and other peoples complaints on webmd.
My doctor said this medicine doesn't cause those side effects. I can't find much out about it relating to these symtoms.
Has anyone tried this drug and could enlighten me on their side effects. I do know the main one listed is flushing or hot flashes.
Please help if you can.

ok, my mom HATED niacin supplements for the reasons you described. I take 40 mgs of generic Lipitor and have absolutely no problems with it. Everyone responds differently to cholesterol medicines and doses can always be adjusted.

So if Niaspan is Niacin, I used that (500 mg). I've had no trouble with it. There are flush free varieties. Also, if you take at bedtime, it's less troublesome. There is not one cholesterol drug made that doesn't make me feel like I've been beaten with ball bats. I refuse to take them. If you do take them, it's recommended to take a lot of co-enzyme Q10. Up to 200 mg.

It is a extended release tablet and is supposed to help with the flushing. Niaspan is a newer version of niacin that isn't supposed to be as hard to adjust to. But I guess time will tell.

If your doctor says they don't cause side effects, he' lying. Even the pharmaceutical commercials tell you that they can. My cousin had serious muscle damage from her statin (cholesterol med) and now can hardly walk. It is a KNOWN possible side effect!! And it is irreversible. There is nothing they can do for her, and NO ONE has denied that the medication caused it! Try the niacin! It's safe and maybe that will get your doc off your back! In this day and age, patients have to be really well-versed and knowledgeable in their own care.

P.S. Niaspan is NOT considered a no flush niacin! The flushing made me feel like my skin was literally on fire, so you might prefer the no flush niacin.

This is not a statin. I didn't mean it wasn't a no flush med. I meant it has a lower chance. But what is the no flush Niacin? My pharmacist hasn't heard of it.

i am a nurse i work on the heart floor at our hospital and the niacin works to lower triglycerides, we tell our patients to take a 325 mg aspirin 1 hour before taking the niacin to help with the flushing side effects

I TAKE NON FLUSHING NIACIN AND I TELL YOU WHAT!! IT CUT MY NUMBERS IN HALF!!!! I ORDER IT OFF THE NET. LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT THE NAME OF IT! ID RECCOMEND IT!

    Is anyone here allergic to Sulfa that is currently taking Diamox? I have been diagnosed with IH now for almost 2 years. I am allergic to Sulfa drugs meaning that my throat will swell up so my Neurologist put me on Topamax.     My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper?
