I like to go shopping in the mall (even just window shopping). It's fun and brightens my mood. However, I'm finding that the music they play (boom boom boom music that caters to teenagers) is giving me headaches! It drives me nuts! It's literally blasting me out of the stores. The entire mall (including the atrium and lobby) play the same type of music--there are no places to escape to. Even the upscale stores like Nordstrom and Bloomingdales play this type of music.
Does this happen to you? I read that people with fibro are sensitive to noise and other such stimulants. What should I do, put earplugs on? I don't like having earplugs or headphones in my ears while walking because I feel cut off from one of the five sense which I rely on for orientation and safety, etc.
Don't tell me to just shop online from now on because it's not as fun. And part of the whole shopping experience is getting out of the house and being in an uplifting environment and seeing beautiful things.

Another day, another ouchie? My bruised achilles tendon (don't ask) makes my foot numb. I dislike crowds and noise. I rarely go to to the mall anymore. If I do, I make my trip as well planned and as short as possible. Take care.
I found that warm ups for basketball, my kids play, always had really loud head banging music. It was so uncomfortable. All the parents complained, so I don't think it is is fibro, I think it is getting older and younger people losing hearing from those earbuds jammed in their ears all of the time.
I hope you find a solution.
I am finding more and more that noise is problematic, especially when I am in a flare. Even the TV at home, or the sound of dishes rattling can bother me now.
I had to go to the ATT store the other day to discuss an error on our bill....they too had loud, booming music playing (I might add, with inappropriate language for a business setting). I asked if it could be turned down, and was told no. I actually had to step outside while they figured out our problem.....just couldn't stand the irritation. That's the first time its been that bad, but I recognize it getting worse all the time.
I'm thinking the foam ear plugs may be the answer for me as well....esp in a setting like you describe.
HUGS from down south :)
At one point at the mall, I covered my ears with my hands thinking that would fade some of the noise. It turned out that that blocked out all the ambien noise EXCEPT the music beat! The music beat became even more prominent! I wonder if foam earplugs would do the same.
Maybe I can record some soft elevator music or environmental sounds on an ipod and stick those earbuds in my ears to drown out the hateful mall music.
I'll try it and let you guys know.
I wear the ear plugs when I sleep at night as I have a "high startle awareness" and if I wake too quickly, jerk my body in alarm, that sudden movement and awakening can cause me to have a bad fibro flare.
