I get this a lot....
If you just lost weight...
You would be able to sleep better...
Your joints would hurt less because of less pressure...
You wouldn't find exercise so hard...
The meds would work better...
You wouldn't be so tired...
or some variation of these. I hear it ALL the time :(
People say these sorts of things and I wish they would just. Shut.Up.
I wasn't overweight when I originally got sick or even for most of the time I was sick. It is this stupid disease (or lupus) which has put on the weight. It is the stupid med they put me on that made me gain almost 50lbs in 3 months. It is the elavil I have been on for ten or so years. It is the flares that put me in bed. The pain that makes it so hard to exercise. The thyroid condition that went untreated for about 5 years because no-one thinks to do extra tests when you are diagnosed as a fibro patient and get even more tired.
I totally get that loosing weight might help some-what with some things but it is NOT the cause of my pain nor is it the responsible for even half of my condition. It is not the cause but rather a consequence of some really bad healthcare and a consequence of having to be more sedentary than others. I wish people would understand :( they don't -they see someone who is fat and lazy.

I don't really know how to label this but I having a rough week and I can't say it's one thing.... I have a lot on my plate which is nothing new and I try to cope in many positive ways and do but I still have my moments. My kids more so my daughters talk to me about everything which I know it's cause of comfort and we are close.... however I really struggle with the venting about their dad which...

And I so much want to lose the weight. It's just such a battle for me. I was also thinking today how much I used to love getting out in my neighborhood and walking. Now my feet and legs hurt me so much, it's so difficult to do.
Just wanted to let you know I understand.
Hugs, Elizabeth
With weight loss promotion, I tell the talkers to come with me and exercise at my pace, ..., after a couple of weeks, they usually say, wow, I didn't realize. (I swell up like an elephant when I try to move fast...)
Best wishes and know you are not alone with this.
I'm sure there are still people who think if I lost 10 lbs I'd feel better.
Half the battle for me has been accepting that other people don't get it - and they never will.
That's why we have support groups. We get it.
Right now, I have five pounds to lose. THat is it. Five. And even my DOCTORS SAY I DO NOT NEED TO....
But my SIL (who is a trial sent to me by God to make sure I learn the lessons of patience, I am beginning to think) is one of those borderline anorexics who thinks worth is measured by dress size, so yeah, I still get it. "You're lucky, Leo, you're a 'big' girl, you don't have trouble finding clothes like 'I' do...."
Right. Patience is a virtue.
Oh but when this comes up I feel so very un-virtuous....
With you,
Leo
I look in the mirror and hate myself. But these posts help me turn it around. Instead of being angry and disappointed in myself for being 35 pounds overweight, I need to be grateful that I've been able to hold it down to 170. It's all about perspective. Thank you everyone.
I'll still keep trying to exercise, but i know that I need to stop beating myself up all the time.
It's especially hard when I try to keep my already very overweight step-daugher from going down this path. How do I explain to an 11 year old how important it is for her to eat right and exercise when I can't do it myself? But I constantly fear and worry for her. She's been obese since age 5, and I fear all the health problems she could be facing from it. Unfortunately her mom is no help - her idea of being a good parent is to give the child whatever they want to keep them quiet. :-(
Coralie I understand about loosing weight. When I was growing up I was always underweight 80-95 pounds. I had a hysterectomy when I was 28 and I started to gain weight and some of the meds that I am on some of the side effects is weight gain at my bigist I was 170 pounds.
I lost 35 pounds because I could not eat I had to have my gallbladder out. now I am putting weight back on I gained 20 pounds and my doctor says you are gaining weight are you exercising and I said I walk about a 1/8 of a mile a day and sometimes I can't even do that.
