gastric dysmotility and fibro

Hi. I have not been around for awhile. I continue to have one medical problem after another year after year along with chronic issues and well I just have felt like any reply or post I was involved in would come out negative.

In 2005 I was diagnosed with gastric dysmotility which includes for me extreme nausea, vomiting , extreme trouble eating. After being told in 2005 I could be like this the rest of my life I went to the University Of Michigan for a second opinion - they confirmed my diagnosis and didn't have really anything else to offer. At that time I was in and out of the hospital for treatment of the resulting dehydration because I couldn't stop vomiting.

I have managed to stay out of the hospital. Now I am entering my 5th week of being ill with this - extreme nausea, minimal vomiting, extreme trouble eating. I am on 2 nausea meds that don't really help and a motility med and prevacid for the resulting GERD. My GI Dr says there is nothing else they can do med wise. Last year I was ill with this a total of 4 months - 4 weeks here, 6 weeks there etc. This year so far not much better. This is no life - it is incapacitating. My fibro is bad enough.

Anyhow, when I was diagnosed with gastric dysmotility both my GI Dr and U of M told me it was caused by my fibro. The overactive part of the nervous system damaged my vagus nerve. I have not noticed anyone on this site say the have this problem - if you do would you please share your experience with me? Thank You

Have you tried Zofran for the nausea and vomiting? It worked better then the other medicine that I have taken in the past. I use to have nausea and vomiting all the time for 2 years due to something other then what you have. Do you get fluids through an IV to help with dehydration?

I take Zofran and Phenergan for nausea. Prevacid for GERD, Domperidone to increase motility in the stomach. If I vomit enough that I cant keep fluids down and get dehydration I have to go the ER. I have not had to go the ER for rehydration in a long time. But I am still very ill and basically starving.

I don't have it constantly as you describe, but yes I have bouts (up to a week at a time) with nausea and have severe GERD. I take generic Protonix (pantoprazole) for the GERD, but have never done anything prescription-wise for the nausea. I drink ginger tea or take a tablespoon of cola syrup as needed. I just refuse to take meds for it. I also have IBS and gluten & lactose intolerance. I always just chalked it up to that. It was so severe when I was pregnant with my first child that I had hyperemesis for 5 months and was hospitalized a couple of times.

I am sorry that you have this issue on top of Fibromyalgia (FMS). Have considered consulting an integrative MD? That would be an MD with a background in holistic medicine. A nutritionist might be helpful as well.

I have the occasional bout with IBS but nothing like you experience. My heart goes out to you. Take care.

Love and have missed the pictue of the dog with the sad eyes....I would say long time how have you been, but you have my heart. Like birthwarrior I lost 40 lbs with my second child hospitalized a few times also but love that big boy.

A trick I learnd and used was freezing green grapes and sucking on them slowly, it may help on those bad days to keep getting fluids.

I have had repeated bouts of nausea but blamed it on this or that had both the down the throat and up the you know what in the last three months and for now things seem ok for them (Doctors can we really trust them).

What you say makes a whole lot of sense and scares the socks of me. I wish I had the answers you are looking for I do not hope(that would mean another soul in need) but if there is someone going through the same traoble thing and it is casue by this dragon of a monster I hope they speak up as it may effect others and help.

For you I am sure you have tried it all but may you be able to sit back in a warm bath and get some moments of peace.

Hi Milly. Sorry for your troubles, but glad to see you and that cute little doggie avatar again. I agree with Fantod in that you should consider seeing an integrative medical doctor. They will look for the root cause of your issue and not just try to treat symptoms. My doctor is an integrative medical doctor whom has helped me tremendously. Best Wishes.

Look for opinions outside GI field.... many issues can affect your GI, including hormones, pain meds, neuro, GYN.... i have an issue every 28 days because of endometriosis.... the swelling aimply wont let the works work! Ipad, sorry for typos.... Integrative medicine or a frank talk with a trusted GP on other possible causes are two things.

And a damaged vagus nerve is news ro me. Did they do a nerve conduction study to determine this?

Hi Milily reading about what you are going trough is like reading about myself , i am in the process of having test done for the problems you have been telling us about. I have been having nausea since june adn nowi have pain all trough my oesophagus and stomach if i eat solid food, had a gastroscopy everything is fine , except me!! i am sorry you have to live with that , i do understand the feeling , day after day with nausea and dealing with fibro , my thoughts go out to you and to not hesitate to write to me if needed . Your explanation helped me to understand .

I had nausea, just nausea, on and off for 7 or so years. When I had it, it was morning to night, and prescription meds didn't help. However, there were alternative things that helped alot. One is ginger. Ginger root, ginger capsules, ginger candy, crystallized sugar on dried ginger. There are also homeopathic remedies that can really help a lot. One I use is Nux Vomica. I use the 30C potency. It would be a place to start with homeopathy, but you might get more help with another remedy. (You can get more information on find the right remedy for you from pharmacies or health food stores that sell them. There are books and websites. You can also go to a homeopath). Also, I used to use marijuana, which works so well for this. I don't know where you live, but in places with dispenseries, you might find a "no buzz" variety that would help you. When I was having this I used to take just a puff to relieve the nausea but I could go to work and do my thing. Sorry, if you are against this, but it is something that relieved nausea when nothing else did. By the way, I considered this a lupus symptom. I also had a low grade fever and joint pains at the time I was going through this.
