Yes. I had both feet operated on a few years ago. Tell everyone you encounter during the process that you have Fibromyalgia to the point of being obnoxious. Don't be left in any one position for a long period of time. Make sure the surgeon understands that you may need extra pain medication. If you gut is telling you that they are not going to do this, find someone else. Don't quit your meds cold turkey. I did and it sent me into a 10 day, mind bending flare. Taper off gradually. Expect that you will take longer to recover. Be well prepared at home during the recovery period with anything and everything that you might need.

Go into surgery with a positive attitude. Going in with a good attitude really helps. Good luck and take care.

I received in the mail today a copy of the MRI report and what it said that I have. I have a Supraspinatus Tendon Tear.

I had knee surgery for a meniscus tear in August and they said I would be walking the 2nd day after surgery. I couldn't walk for MONTHS after the surgery. They wouldn't up my pain meds because they didn't believe that I was actually in THAT much pain. I puked quite a few times from the pain being so awful. I had to do physical therapy for a long time after surgery (like double or triple the length of time of a "normal" person). Make sure that you get them to realize you may need a higher dose of pain meds than the average person. Be prepared that it will take much longer to heal than the average person, but that's okay. I got tear in my right shoulder and the doctor isn't doing anything about it

I have Fibro and many other physical problems so when I faced surgery it was pretty scary but I was bleeding for years became 24/7 heavy at times so no choice if I hadn't had surgery I would had died. I was opposite of most since I am allergic to most meds (the ones I'm not allergic to don't help) so I was asking for no meds during surgery unless it was a life or death necessity. I was lucky to have (in my opinion) some of the best surgeons and they saved my life. I gather as much info as I can on doctors, surgeons, checking out reviews to try to make sure they really care about saving lives. I know, we would hope all doctors do. Good luck!

I second all the above and would add that next time (hopefully not...but I believe I also need shoulder surgery), I would make sure I have in home care after surgery.

Experience: 2 years ago total hysterectomy ....like Fantod, I was ridiculous about telling everyone BUT my ob/gyn listened and I had two procedures done and two very caring docs. I got the anesthesiologist that my ob doc personally used and I did not break out in hives and my pain management was the best ever.
Fast forward to one month ago exactly: Gall bladder surgery....emergency surgery and no choice but still tried to state over and over about fibro sensitivity to pain. Knowledgeable docs, imo, will get it and have a great post op nurse(s) to monitor more closely....however, the regular on call docs did not this time and I had a horrible episodic out of body pain flare. I was screaming at top of my lungs because I was on my back too long (serious spine issues too). I had a pain pump, because the anesthesiologist was good about listening.....BUT my pain goes from a 6-9 lickety split and I've learned I need double dose all at once. Every body is different. All I know is that I was left at 3am with one nurse who didn't know what to do and a lazy internist on call doc that wouldn't do anything. Next day I complained all over the place and this new hospital (that did not have my history of angina attacks due to spiked pain), got schooled on ME!!! The nurse manager (who politely told me to go to other hospital next time), got a dose of....."OH NO YOU DIDN'T JUST TELL ME THAT!". I walked to the nurses station with all the shift change nurses there about to yank out my i.v. and said, "I'm checking out now, get this i.v. out of my arm now!"....because your nurse manager just told me to go to different hospital. As leo would say...beyotch. My very caring nurse followed me back and begged me to stay because I was nowhere near ready to go home. She gave me toradol and finally dilaudid. They kept me on dilaudid till I went home. The moral of the story Is, sometimes you have to scream and yell so you don't scream and yell in pain. p.s. don't let this story frighten you...I've had 4 hairy accidents and have complex pain issues.

I just want to put in perspective....but foresight and planning for at home care, good pain management especially post-op, to me, is imperative. I also had a priest say a prayer before my hysterectomy with all the docs and anesthesiologists in the room. I was shaking in fear because of bad experiences and since then, I am not terrified to go into ER. I had to again this last Saturday because my pain spiked. Same hospital, doc headed off pain with morphine dose and I was able to go home that night. Once you get it into records that fibro will spike your pain, my experience has been, they will treat you differently than joeshmo off the street. Good luck, God Bless.

Plyice: I've had tear in my shoulder too for long time. I've read that docs would prefer you heal the tear and do physical therapy because you will need p.t. anyway for after surgery. I've also read....not sure if true or not...that surgery is not really a cure all for tears. If mine doesn't get better this next p.t. go round, I think I'll be forced to consider. I've seen the ugly cutting from a gal who had surgery done and it is well, ugly :-0. That made me reconsider! Good luck and please let know what happens.
