Hi, I am a mom of a 12 yr old son that has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. He has been having symptoms for the last year, but only once a month for 3 or 4 days, the rest of the time he is a normal active pre teen. I am very familiar with fibromyalgia, both of his grandmas have it, and my sister. It took my a long time to realize that's what he had. A lot of what I've read said it mostly affects women and it doesn't usually hit until the 20's........he was diagnosed by a rhemutolgist at a children's hospital about 4 months ago. reading your posts it sounds a lot like what my son is going through, the pain and the emotions. He just feels very confused and alone being that he's so young and male. I am at a loss what to do to comfort him. I was just wondering if anyone has heard of a young boy suffering with fibromyalgia? Reading your posts will help him know he is not alone and that people out there knows what he's going through as far as the aches and pains and frustrations. Thanks for sharing, it's helped me understand a little better too. As far as treatment during his bad days he can't even function enough to go to school, he takes ibprofen for pain, Epsom salt baths, I try to have him go on slow short walks, but he hurts so bad during those days. Any advice would be appreciated!

Fun facts to up your day:The Big Bang wasn't IN space... it was OF space. How does that happen? Well, now you know why I'm NOT a physicist. Cuz I dunno. It just happened. Thena gain a new hypothesis is that our "black energy/matter" is actually waste dumped in our universe from somewhere else's black holes. How and all that? Don't ask. You start getting all "The Matrix" and muttering...

Wellw e're two days into the new season (autumn in the Northern, spring in the Southern). And finally, it feels like it might stay! No, wait, 80s F again. Ugh. Oh well.***In 1869, Wall Street did one of its first spectacular crashes, after the ever-unscrupulous and a-holish Jay Gould and James Fisk decided to corner gold. Since we were not yet back on the gold standard after our little unCivil...

I'm at a loss as to why your son has not been given a medication which addresses nerve pain. Ibuprofen is for inflammatory pain. There is a difference; Fibromyalgia is not inflammatory. Forgive me but it doesn't sound like his pain issues are being properly addressed.
Have you told the school that he attends? His needs can be accommodated.
I'd like to recommend the book Fibromyalgia for Dummies." You can find it on Amazon. This is our go-to book and provides a comprehensive overview of this complex illness. Even though you are familiar with this illness, a refresher course with updated information might be helpful.
Take care!
The three primary medications used to treat Fibromyalgia (FMS) are Cymbalta, Savella and Lyrica. Gabapentin and muscle relaxers may help too. If he needs smaller doses than these medications come in, they can be reformulated by a compound pharmacy. These pharmacies are everywhere.
If he does in fact have FMS ( good reason for seeing a new doctor), this is a chronic issue. It should be continuously treated whether he feels good or bad. Trying to get ahead of pain once it has really gotten going is very difficult. Being proactive and taking meds before it gets out of hand works much better.
Good luck and keep in touch!
I've also found that different medications (both otc and Rx) help with different things. For example, for me, Aleve (naproxen sodium) seems to help with muscle issues more than ibuprofen does. Hydrocodone helps with generalized pain, but it's not that great for headaches. The short version is, it will probably take some trial and error to figure out what he needs on any given day.
Joining this group is a great way to support your son as well - many of us here have had years of experience, and hopefully some of that wisdom will help you help him. Kids' complaints so often get dismissed or overlooked - someday he'll know how blessed he was that you paid attention.
