On Tuesday at 6 a.m. I woke to hearing my almost 9 year old having a seizure. NOT a 'grand' (they're not called that anymore, but I can't think of the name) but a "complex partial" She was asleep, and making rhythmic noises and movements of her mouth and hand. It was unnerving to say the least! We saw the doc and she ordered an EEG which we had done today. Now waiting for results might be a week.
My mind leaps to worst case scenario but I know it's unlikely (tumor) so then I am thinking epilepsy? I'm anxious. (it was not a febrile seizure... she's well, had no fever. She had one at 18 mos though, which puts her at a greater risk for developing epilepsy)

Prayers and warmest thoughts sent to you and daughter. MY PC went wonky yesterday so I just now got on and saw this. I can't imagine your stress level atm. Please take extra good care of yourself during the holidays and until tests are back. I know easy for me to say :/ Many many prayers are being said for her hon. Hugs AB
My seizures are triggered by my FM. The clonic tonic (grand mals) are controled now but I still have petit mal (absent seizures) and drop seizures now and then.
I started having them after a fall and the returned and stayed after a car accident.
If she had it in her sleep that is actually a good thing, as those seizures effect your life less. Many states/provinces even let people with that type drive.
They will find out if she has them...most EEG come up negative. She should have an ambulatory EEG and a sleep deprived they are the better tests.
Epilepsy by definition is one or more seizures. It is not a specific illness persay as many people have different triggers or causes. It just means for whatever reason the brain lights up like a christmas tree now and again.
Bottom line epilepsy is a gross inconvience yes and it scares the crap out of our loved ones and makes you feel like crap and like you just finished a triathalon but it isn't the worst thing in the world.
It is like FM, it sucks but it usually won't kill you as long as you play it safe. Like don't have baths alone until your seizures are controlled etc.. If she seizes again, don't try and stop her, she can't swallow her tongue it is impossible, just make sure she is laying down and her head is safe from harm, loosen tight clothes around the neck and let it happen, when it stops roll her on her side in the recovery positiion, if it goes for longer than 15 mins of unconscious seizing then call 911 if not she should be fine.
Besides I have an excuse at work for being rude to my boss, I have frontal lobe epilepsy, sometimes I just blurt out things...lol

Finding the right medications can be tricky, but the seizures can be managed. She might not be able to do certain things, but it's not the end of life.
Don't worry mom...she'll be okay :-)
