So I saw on the news that a couple house cats and big cats in zoos have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Just wanted to let people know that, as a general rule, you don't have to worry about it affecting your pets. There are almost 1 million confirmed cases in people in the United states, and that's likely the tip of the iceberg. And with that, only a handful of pets have tested positive. The cats that have tested positive were located in New York where cases have surged, and those cats had only mild upper respiratory signs-sneezing, coughing, eye discharge and lethargy. And they have made a full recovery. No severe disease has been reported in cats. Our lab sent a notice that they have tests for pets but they want veterinaians to test only when other more common issues have been ruled out (common URIs, asthma, allergies, herpesvirus etc) and preferably with the recommendation of the department of agriculture. So most likely, your pet wouldn't qualify, assuming the rest of the country is handling this similar to new England. Your pet's chance of getting covid-19 is miniscule
2 cats have tested positive in the hub of cases in the US, and no cases in dogs have been reported
You most likely can't get covid from your pet
If you notice respiratory signs in your pet, don't panic and call your it-it's way more likely to be something else
If by some freak incident your pet does get coronavirus, it's unlikely to have more than mild symptoms
We also have to keep in mid that Covid-19 is a novel (new) coronavirus. We and cats and other mammals have colds or sickness from other ones, so please approach news with caution. I spent an hour last week calming someone down when her cat got diagnosed with a coronavirus.... And there's LOTS of coronaviruses affecting lots of mammalian species.
