I would like to suggest that everyone here who has this complaint see a urologist and suggest that you might have interstitial cystitis, as another person suggested. I have had this for many years and only knew what it was because my mother had it. I take two medications for it. Pyridium (which I have read on DS causes side effects for some, not me though) and hydroxyzine Hcl. I'm too tired to get up and get the dosages, but those are the two meds I take for this. Have been for many years. The doctor tried me on only the pyridium at first, but it didn't do the trick, so he added the other medication and I've been fine ever since. The only side effect is that it causes your pee to be bright orange, so those little dribbles MUST be addressed with some kind of protection. Without these meds, I don't know what I would do. the pain of this condition is SO horrible. Good luck to everyone who suffers with this awful condition.
I wear Always panty liners every day and once in a while, Poise pads. Partner has this problem, too, but there are no pads available for men. He uses a urinal that he brought home from the hospital. It sits right by his recliner.
If we're out and about, we use the rest rooms before the pressure starts. That helps reduce our accidents.
At least now I know we're not alone. -- Nancy
It's a real pain.
I am currently trying to strengthen my pelvic floor muscles by doing those
Kegel exercises because I thought it's because of weak muscles.
I have only begin doing them recently so we shall see.
I do notice that Tea and coffee irritate my bladder something silly. And I have had to cut way back on those beverages.
But yeah I get sudden urges to go and I HAVE to go. I have tried squeezing the muscles tight to try and hold it but it's almost impossible. I change my underwear sometimes 3 times a day because of slight accidents. I talked to a friend and she said to get those Poise pads. It's effing ridiculous that I have to wear a pad. That's as sexy as a brick.
I use to wear thongs! And now I have to wear a pad at my age. Ugh.
I NEVER had incontinence issues until about a year ago. It just seems to have gotten worse.
I have seen a urologist but it was well over a year ago because I had a kidney stone in my ureter at the time and I also had Frequent urination even after the stone passed.
At that time I wasn't having incontinence issues.
Back then There was no infection, no bladder abnormalities. Lab work all came back find. there was nothing.
For the frequent urination the doc suggested medication for over active bladder. He also said as we get older the bladder muscle walls get weaker and can get irritated more easily by drinks and foods that at one time we may have been able to tolerate.
I'm not going back to the urologist because I know how it's going to be. Tests that reveal nothing and suggestion of medications.
And I recently had my urine checked at a gyno visit. And everything is fine.
So my only suggestion is to avoid irritants like coffee and tea and any other foods or drink you notice that irritate the bladder.
And to try the pelvic floor strengthening exercises. Kegel.
It may help a little bit.
