Hello, good morning, and good night:-) No, seriously, I have no idea what end is up. Turns out this pre-menopause mood swing thing? Even tho' I take meds for PTSD that supposedly work on the hormone moods.... Yeah, no. Chocolate. Lots and lots of it. ANd stay away. And come here. And go to hell. ANd hug me. And that was just in a couple hours. My mom's wasn't this bad, so presumably this is a little genetic gift from Dad's side.
I say all that to warn you that I'm in snark mode, my baseline coping mechanism, so check-in may get a bit odder than usual. Or not. I can't judge. Really, I can't. Chocorgasm required. (Yes, I wrote that.)
Gentlemen, I do apologize. Look at it this way. Now you know what makes women tick, before they go "boom"!

Native Americans introduced English settlers to popped corn, AKA our belvoed popcorn, this date in 1630, according to "the stories". In fact, someone probably knew, but this is what was recorded. People would eat it as a breakfast cereal, with milk. So investigating the history of popped corn, I came across a site that alleged popcorn was known in Asia thousands of years before Europeans reached the Americas. Now, since maize corn didn't go outside the Americas till after the Euro-invasion, along with tomatoes, potatoes, squash varieties, peppers, cocaine, tobacco, cocoa, and more? *Not remotely possible*. "FactMonster" got *such* an e-mail from me.
BTW, you can also pop quinoa (a South American seed, super-healthy stuff, use in place of couscous if you need to avoid pasta/gluten). Not worth it, but you can. Amaranth (another "super-seed" but not that tasty) and wheat also can be popped, or, as it's called, "puffed". Yes, puffed rice and puffed wheat cereals are bred for that fluffy puffy poofy factor. As with corn, special strains do it best. You can try popping everyday corn etc., but your yield is iffy. And there may be techniques invovled besides "expose to sudden extreme heat".
Speak of, out in the US West, certain pine varieties only release their seeds from the cones in extreme heat, as in *forest fires*. So you can get huge stands of that pine where fire has hit, and see almost none where fire hasn't. (Also, you can just toss a cone into a fire to make it open up and get the pine nuts out if you're hungry, but very few pine trees have decent edible nuts, for flavor. Europeans mostly use stone pine (arachaeologists have evidence of those going back about 5,000 years) but in the US, western pines like the Colorado, Mexican, or Nevada soft-shell pine are used for nuts, and in many areas, the right to harvest is reserved for Native American tribes. The so-called single-leaf pinyon (pine) is another variety. Mostly, though, animals are the prime pine nutters.:-) Why mostly out west? Well, in the US East, the forests were dominated historically by hardwoods, white pine (no nut value), and Eastern hemlock (tannery value, long story, bark, tannic acid, leather-making, smelly, ew).
How the eff did I get here from popcorn?! *headdesk*
In 1920, the first dog racing track to use a fake rabbit was opened in California. This of course begs the question: Were they using real bunnies? How? Why? Wouldn't standing at the end of a straight track and y elling 'Bacon!' do the same thing?
Meanwhile, speak of racing, and stupid headlines, this one from 1969: "Woman wins horse race". Errr.... No. Female jockey. On back of horse. OMG. *facepalm* ANyway, had to throw that in there.
And in 1923, the first (successful) farm of chinchillas opened up in California. Chinchillas are rodents from the South American Andes mountains, with fluffy tails like squirrels, but soft, and the long-haired variety particularly (which prefer elevations around a mile high or so, and live in little herds) are used for fur coats and fur stuff and fur in general. No, they don't survive. Sheep are shorn, chinchillas are long-haired squirrel-rats and are killed. Frankly, IMHO, anyone who wants a fur coat should have to raise, kill, skin, and cure the furs themselves. One of our neighbors tried raising a fur-bearing animal. Aside from the stink, the horror show of the cages, and annual bloodshed, it was just lovely. *eyeroll* BTW, no, I don't like raising animals *only* for their skin/fur. Cows get eaten. The hide would go to waste. Nobody eats chinchilla or mink or whatever.
Side note: The recent lifting of a hunting ban on big game and wolves in ALaska's wildlife preserves is aimed at not preserving wildlife, but at fun for hunters, like a certain person who will remain unnamed except as Eric-the-Red-Handed, that miserable bwana-playing safari-taking joy-hunting peice of incompetence.... *seethe* "Here, son, have Alaska for a playground..." Doyou have *any* idea what it took to restore wolf populatoins? What their decimation by humans did to the food chain? Wolves eat mice, rats, rodents, etc, not just "big game" or "livestock" (and in fact, like pumas, prefer small easy prey, thanks, the big stuff can kick and hurt you), and a herd of wolves *will* hunt caribou, but they take down old, sick, ailing, injured, etc., and effectively *cull* the herd like humans do their own da*n livestock! Also, if you pen up livestock, you just duplicated Nature's tar pits, which is called "predator bait". Hello?! Argh! Free-ranging herds are more often victim to a hungry puma (admitted) than to a rampaging wolf pack! ANd they don't kill for fun unlike certain other speices (humans!)....
When cats "play" with their food, btw, they're actually mimicking the hunt all over again, and it causes production of digestive juices that allow them to live on a bones-meat-fur-feather diet. Otherwise, they might not be able to digest as much as they do of their prey.
More side-side-side-way-side note: I also hate the concept of dog fights, cockerel fights, etc., for human amsuement. You want blood and guts to bet on? Get in there naked and bet on yourself. Hmph. *snort tail-lash*

Welcome to the Perseid meteor showers, the "biggies" usually every year. (The Leonids beat 'em one year IMHO).AND today much of the northern hemisphere will see 5 to 99% solar eclipse. How cool is that? Your best bet is to be in the UK or norhtern Spain, where totality is excellent before sundown. Me, I'll get a super duper tiny itty bitty slice of it, so little that it won't be noticeable. New...

... observed a solar eclipse.

Leo, I have to say that I didn't go through a real crazy time during my "change." Probably because I already have depression and anxiety, so it wasn't a real change for me. I feel badly for you though. I remember one "time of the month" when I was young, where my hubby ticked me off so bad that I picked up a chair and slammed it down on the floor. Whoa, that was some kind of cranky. My hubby just decided to leave me alone for a bit. Good choice. Enjoy your chocolate.
I'll be back in a bit. Time to make lunch. I'm starving.
Leo, sorry crazy hormones are giving you a hard time. All that chocolate sounds good though. Thanks for the trivia. I've never gone hunting but always wanted to, just to see what it's like to bring home my own food. I think if it weren't for fibro I would have done it a long time ago. I walk a little bit and hurt so much the next day. One of my younger brothers used to plant and grow experimental things in our back yard when we were kids and I think one of them was popcorn.
Kel, I'm sorry about your sis and the things your family is going through... all that care you have to do. I pray for strength for everyone and that things work out.
My social worker canceled on me just before our appt yesterday, her father passed away and she had to catch a plane out. Poor thing sounded stressed. I was running late anyway from grocery shopping.
I was conked out last night. I have laundry to do today and packing. Haven't even gotten a suitcase out yet or looked over my pill organizer and meds (the most important part). I always get nervous when it comes time to go somewhere that I'll forget one of my medications and I'll get a migraine or ibs or whatever and be stuck miserable, the whole trip ruined. Our landlady is town and said she "maybe" coming by this morning, but never confirmed. We caught her sneaking around the property several days ago in a bright red rental car. I REALLY hope she comes so I can tell her next time you do a black ops try not using a bright red car.
Back in a bit.
miki, glad your pup did not escape. One time our son's dog jumped through the window screen, and was standing in their yard when they got home. That dog had such bad separation anxiety. Hope your day goes well.
bbmom, I was on hormone replacement for 3 years after my hyst. When I went off of it, I didn't notice any change, so guess it was time to stop it. My hot flashes were not bad. Hope the chiro can help you.
Wow, Kel, you have a lot on your plate. So kind of you to help everyone, but don't forget to take care of yourself. Hope the pain continues to go down.
Angela, I hope you have a really good day on your outing. Go away, pain, I say!
Wonder, I have often wondered what the sciatic nerve is for. Mostly for shooting pains down my leg, into my foot, I think. Hope your burst of energy doesn't put you in a flare. That happens to me at times.
crumbs, you hang in there. Stop in with a little hello, or lots to tell. All is ok.
page 2....
I went to see my therapist this morning. I talked a blue streak. I guess I had a lot to say. Anyway, I feel better, and not so stressed. Our house had a showing last night. Our realtor said the people were hard to read, so he is calling them today. Praying for the best.
I still have my cold. It's been going on for 6 days. My head is plugged up, and I feel out of it. I'm coughing now too, but not bad enough to warrant going to the doctor. I think I'll live.
Hubby is in California. He's flying back on Thursday. We are hoping for a big contract. It would help everyone in the company so much.
The house is all clean, so I can rest today. Hope all of you have a good day.
Bobbi, I started a new bible study last Sunday before church, 8:30am, too early, but I do enjoy it. I hope you had a good study, it's hard sitting in those chairs pretending everything is fine. I hope your pain lowers throughout the day.
Miki, I don't know if I've ever told you this, but my niece who is now 16 wants to be a vet. She gets to assist in surgery at our local vet clinic. I've seen a few surgery pics, yikes I couldn't handle it. I think you are one smart cookie, so it's only natural that your dog is super smart :-)
Angela, I'm glad you are going out with friends despite the pain. That's a hard thing to make ourselves do. I hope it goes good and your pain isn't too bad.
bbmom, I'm glad you get to dress comfortable at work, especially with all that pelvic pain, that sounds horrible. I hope everything goes good today, and praying for tomorrow. I've had the upper, it's not bad, just the not eating part sucks.
crumbs, glad to see you on today. The stress is a beast for sure with this fibro. Hang in there.
wonder, I want that energy bug bite. :-) I hope you don't overdo it.
kel, It sounds like a lot of hard stuff to process and deal with right now. Please take time for yourself, and don't let things cave down on you. I'm worried about you. Praying for you friend. Hugs
blue, I'm praying you leave nothing behind so you can enjoy every minute of your vacation. That's always my fear, if we went anywhere, lol. :-) It will all get done, I hope you manage ok and don't get too stressed or in pain during the packing. I'm thinking about you.
ida, I'm praying for that big contract. And please know I am always praying about your housing situation too. I know it's stressful, but you aren't going through it alone.
That was hard, hope I didn't miss anyone. I'm not with it today, pain and anxiety.
Have a good day.
Bobbii, I hope your Bible study went alright despite your flare. My fingers hurt picturing you picking the hard corn off those cobs.
Miki, yay for the dog staying put! Hope surgery goes well.
Bbmom, that pelvis sounds very ouchie! I'm glad they let you get away with sweats at work. Hope you get into the chiro soon!
Wow, Angela!! Excited for your lil sis!
Wonderbaby, I'll take some of that cake, yum!! I love chocolate coconut anything! If I try making my own, though, I'll probably add some chopped roasted mac nuts (drool)..... Sorry about your sciatic nerve. Have they tried shots in your back? Those helped me some time ago.
Hey, Crumbs. Good to see you. Sending you energy! Glad the inspection is over.
Ida, glad your counseling went well and you feel better. I was hoping something would help those nerves of yours. I saw Cali is all flooded. Is he in a drier area? Hope you kick that stubborn cold real soon! Fingers crossed for a bid on your place.
Thanks, Twin. I hope it get it all too. Sorry you're pain and anxiety is still up. I'll say a quick prayer for you. Yeah, it was hard to get everyone's posts today for me too. lol.
