Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) describes a spectrum of permanent and often devastating birth-defect syndromes caused when the pregnant mother consumes alcohol. The main effect of fetal alcohol exposure is brain damage, which can be caused during any trimester, because the fetus's brain continues to develop throughout the entire pregnancy.

NOFAS Illinois has initiated a project to submit comments to the DSM-V committee urging them to include FASD/ARND in the next revision of the DSM. I am forwarding their message to all of you. This is our last chance to have our voice heard regarding inclusion of FASD in the new DSM-V. Deadline is June 10th.
Encourage anyone, who works with your child and knows the challenges, to submit a comment (friends, professionals, family, grandparents, advocates and caregivers etc,).
Here are some of the advantages of having FASD included in DSM-V:
1. Diagnosing an FASD will be very convenient
2. DSM Codes could be used to bill for services (Insurance coverage)
3. Clinicians will receive the education in academic settings and so will be more aware of the condition and be supportive to parents and individuals.
4. A ton of research will be initiated. (remember how Autism services are covered by insurance and a lot of new research is coming up)
5. More and new research funding will be allocated.
Disadvantage for not getting FASD included in DSM - V:
1. The next revision will happen 13 - 15 years from now, around 2030.
2. Insurance coverage might not be available for FASD related services and supports.
3. Not much research funding.
4. No State funding for years to come, looking at the additional budget cuts that will happen every year and the State's fiscal health.
Here is what you have to do:
1. Go to - www.dsm5.org
2. Register as a new user on the right upper corner under 'Participate'
3. Sign in, scroll down the page and select a category where comments are requested. Choose the category for Neurodevelopmental disorders - A 00 intellectual Developmental Disorders.
4. In the comment section, write your story and strong reasons on why you would want FASD to be included in the DSM -V and why under that particular category. You can submit your comments in other categories as well, based on your child's presenting problems and if the committee is open to accepting comments (i.e. Substance Abuse; Disruptive, Impulse Control, and Conduct Disorders).
5. Submit your comments.
6. Once you receive the confirmation e-mail, send me an email at dsm@come-over.to that your comment got submitted so that I can keep a tab on the number of comments that got submitted.
7. Your responses will be kept completely confidential.
