However, the judge is extremely unsympathetic and basically admits that she hates hearing these cases. My mom said she thinks that they will each have only 10 years on the registry but she wasn't sure.
I agree that its not a terrible thing to put it off. It was also more time that my dad could work before being forced to retire. The longer he works, the less they will struggle financially and the less pressure there is on my mom.
The thing that sucked was sitting for 3+ years in limbo wondering when the call would come. I still am deathly afraid of cops because of the way they entered our home. Selfishly, I am glad that I no longer live with my parents because I would be constantly fearful of another search.
His attorney said, now did you ever see Shawshank? well it is like that. Scared my love one to death. When he got there, said it was nothing like that. And he has adapted well. We have great faith and try not to be anxious, it will all work out.
Let your brother know there are a lot of young men just like him there and if he just doesn't get involved in prison politics and just be Switzerland, he will do just fine.
I'm sorry, I don't remember all the details - are they being held in a county facility? Is it nearby? Is your mom able to visit? Yes, I agree. Waiting until October for sentencing is very hard. Actually knowing what their terms are will bring you some peace because it won't be hanging over you anymore. Just keep writing, keep talking to them. This is hard - it has been hard for each and every person here. Just know you're not alone.
I dont trust anything that has to do with the courts. I dont trust attorneys, Judges, cops, Parole officers....none of them. I try and find holes in the system.
Im at a point where *I* carry a voice recorder when dealing with any of them. I document everything and send emails and write letters memorializing EVERY conversation.
My Son's P.O. Lied out his ass. PB backed him up. State of NJ refuses to take a formal complaint against the P.O. Even up to the AG's office with proof!!
There is only one way. RESEARCH. Find laws that apply through research. Do your homework.
Keep Records. Memorialize!!!
I am also realizing as we go through this more and more that although they have my support, they haven't always been the best people or made the best choices. Their choices are what got them in this mess. I will always support them no matter what, but I think I am finding more peace in realizing that I am in no way responsible for their actions. I still completely disagree with the consequences they are facing but I am getting over the whole "I should have done something different so this didn't happen" phase.
For the longest time I blamed myself for making sure they didn't talk to the cops or making sure their computers were clean. Sometimes I feel like I have to protect everyone (I am a control freak I guess) but at least if theres something positive I can take from this, it is learning to let go.
There was a lot of negotiation, and I guess the original deal was 2 years. I don't really know the details. I don't have much control over what goes on. I live out of state so I only hear what they choose to tell me. I do pass on advice from here though and it has been very helpful. I do believe my brother's lawyer when she says that this was probably the best they were going to get.
