You are correct REW - a horrible crime that should never have happened - the perp is about 18 or 19 - obviously with violent tendencies - you know I have wondered often and this brings it up again - what happened to the jargon we have always been told that rape is not sexual but instead a power thing?

I think that the act of rape is committed to imposed oneself onto another human being in the most humiliating manner---raping them. Nothing could be more humiliating for the woman than raping her, I would think.

I think it must also originate from a tremendous amount of anger on the part of the rapist.

But it almost has to have some type of sexual component to it; otherwise, why not just physically attack them without raping them.

Anyway, it is a sad story.

Ok, I read the story you posted REW, My first feeling was to have the dog shot, then I read more, sorry folks this guy needs the Chair, most offenders are not like this animal.

Yes there should have been a guard with the teacher, I really feel sorry for her, but I doubt it will hurt the cause, some people who commit these kinds of acts just need to be put down.

This seems to be the problem we are all lumped in with the dangerous ones, the really dangerous ones do not need or deserve a second chance, Ok I f I have offended anyone all I can say is this is they way I feel.

With all due respect how can you say it was not the Rapists fault, I blame the Rapist as much as the prison, Hell the rapist could have chosen not to commit the act, he had a choice, now his choice should be in which way he wants to die. 2nd chance was to go to prison, then try and turn his life around, he blew it, no 3rd chance for the sake of the public, my kids, your kids or family.

I misspoke due to emotions I try to control. Yes, the rapist is to blame. The action was his. He needs to be in isolation and not near potential victims. Sorry, I do not believe in the death penalty. This is why they have Max security.
The prison was also to blame for leaving her unprotected. If she was a guard, she would not have been alone. Women guards were never alone when I was in prison. I see the prison as being culpable in this crime. I feel horrible for the woman. She was trying to do some good. Some are beyond redemption like this animal.

I'm from AZ, I have had one brother go to prison for aggravated assault and the other is an SO for life. Because of this I take a high interest in prisons and how closely they are tied to almost everything that is politics here. First off I know that Chuck Ryan , who is the head of the state prisons here has recently been called out by a lot of politics for building an $50 million dollar super max prison at the Lewis unit. A lot of people think it's a waste of money, especially when our state is so strapped for cash and cutting every corner they can. When I read the part of the article that said the victim tried calling for help on her radio but it was set to a station that no one heard her on, I immidiatly was like wtf?? Why would that happen unless they were just waiting for something like this to happen, thus giving them justification for their $50 million dollar super prison. You see the Meadows unit, where this happened, is extremely over crowded and under staffed. But that is because we lock everyone up in this state for just about anything. We don't need more prisons. We need to stop locking people up for non violent or victimless crimes. That would probably take care of half the prison population right there. But wait we can't do that....Arizona is in bed with the private prisons too. Which means we signed a contract with them that guarantees we will keep their prisons I believe 90% full at all times. If we fail to meet that quota the private prisons will fine the state of AZ. Why would we make such a deal, selling out our own citizens?? Because the way the private prisons work is they find the towns with the highest unemployment rate, the least amount of money. They tell them if they build their prison there, then it will provide thousands of jobs for the people living there. So they do it. How stupid can people be? It is their sons or daughters or even themselves that will fill those beds. The make new laws and create longer sentencing guidelines for old ones to ensure they meet that quota .

The problem is that the states spend so much money trying to house so many inmates that very few resources remain for the teacher's protection. The state is not that concerned with the staff's safety as their priority is to somehow keep so many inmates locked up.

When I was a tutor, we had one male principal and three female teachers. I rarely saw a CO in the education building except to come in once in a while to the library to read the newspaper. The teachers and staff were virtually left unprotected.

At the first place I was at, we had a kitchen worker stabbed to death and several female counselors assaulted. On my unit we had 160 inmates and only two---sometimes only one---CO for the entire unit. Since this was a medium, the COs most stayed in their glass housing unit and did not mingle with the inmates. The only time they were out was at count time when they did the usual head count and then the inmates were locked down.

So I am not surprised that the teacher in this article could find no help anywhere.

Wow, the Fed system is totally different! The units never had any less than 2 guards. Education, kitchen, etc. had 2 or more also. Of course, I was in a Low also so the violence was minimal. Even those with long sentences were in their last 5 years.

I was wondering if there's more to this story then what has been reported? There's just something that's not sitting right with me.

I'm with you Suchaslife. I can't quite come to grips with the idea of the rapist being the one to call for help on the radio and when he didn't get a response, having his victim call for help on a phone. If he raped her it's obvious her well being was not a concern of his so why try to get her help after the fact?

There's that aladdin and why was the radio that she had set wrong??

CO's do like to set up attacks against people they don't like it or teach a lesson. Sounds like this was a set up, that the CO's were teaching the woman a lesson. Maybe she wasn't following their rules or she something else. If she had her walkie on one channel, and everyone else on another channel, sounds like a set up.
