* Terrible thing happened (terrorist attacks..)
* Politicians reacted creating Homeland Defense.
* Took away many of our constitutional rights of privacy. (NSA mass data collection without warrants.)
* Created the TSA to screen air passengers. (ineffectively.)
* Industries built and sold expensive screening machines for airports, fake portable cell towers to track suspected terrorist without warrants.)
Yet not ONE terrorist attack has been detected and over 95% of attempts to smuggle fake bombs onto planes were successful.
Here is what I have seen over the years----
Yes, because of the registry income is generated for certain groups of people-----polygraphers, POs, GPS companies, etc.; there is no doubt that their income is increased---and they profit---- because of the registry. More clients in the form of registrants mean more income for these people.
But the creation and purpose of the sex offender registry was not so a bunch of people can make money or turn a profit from it. Nobody sat around one day and thought to himself, "Gee, a registry could possibly generate a lot of money or income for certain people, so we need to create one."
Trust me, that did not happen.
IOW, while many people do indeed profit from the registry and the registrants, a profit motive was not why it was established nor is the government profiting by the existence of the sex offender registry. Certain groups profit, but not the government.
The reason the registry and all its laws continue to be a problem for folks like us----the reason the registry even exists-----is that politicians continue to pass more and more restrictive laws in an effort to look "tough on crime" and to continue to be re-elected year after year. So, there is no profit motive as far as the politicians are concerned, but a motive for them to continue to wield their power.
Having said that, the groups of people profiting from the registry have no incentive to ever want the registry abolished. GPS companies, for example, want their profits to stay in the millions rather than in the hundreds of thousands of dollars; this is only human nature.
But no, the government is not the entity profiting from the registry.

If, by government entities you mean politicians, I would agree. But I doubt the Department of Justice or the OSBI in Oklahoma------Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation-----or the FBI or Homeland Security receives kickbacks from these companies.
The bad guys here and the true villains are the politicians.
But who knows; nothing surprises me anymore.

Rew is right again, nobody sits around a table with ill intentioned ideas.
Are there dangerous sex offenders living in your neighborhood? We'll tell you after these commercial messages.
I'm not saying there aren't people who make money off the registry or individual government entities that make money off the registry. The government as a whole loses money on prison and the registry, our economy loses in the long run, and really tax payers take the brunt of it ok the chin. The registry is simply not the main cog in the wheel of the registry, fear is.
