I do not believe you can withhold the clothing, as your actions could be interpreted as obstruction. Otherwise, your son must not say anything. Also, for your protection, do not ask your son for details as to what happened. You do not want to be interrogated either. The less you or your spouse know, the better.

Your son did a terrible mistake, but shouldn't have to pay the test if his life for mistake. An attorney will help make sure the best outcome is made.
You said your son is 15, in New York State they cannot question an underage child without an adult present who is his parent, or his lawyer. Check the laws in your state. Good luck.
