Is there any particular reason why he is placing this burden on you? After all, you two are separated and you are only collateral damage from his mistakes.
You did not create this situation. This is all his responsibility, so maybe he should accept responsibility for this predicament.
He was the one who committed the crime. It is HIS parents that need an explanation, so I would think he would man up and explain the situation to them. If he is in jail, cannot he write them a letter??
I don’t think it is your place to talk to his parents, particularly since you two are no longer together.
Just my two cents.

As you know, in my case, my ex put me in the situation of not being able to tell his mother or family or anyone, which is awkward now because they will never understand the real reason for the breakup because I still want to preserve his choice not to tell his family. In a way, perhaps the "positive" (taking liberties to call it that I know) of your situation is that his family (who were your connections too since you were married and with him so long) now have the full picture of your relationship and the breakup.
