Keeke is the "universal" commissary for us to send care packaged to him of selected food items - 12.50 for an 8 ounce pack of instant coffee - 1.50 for a 6 ounce bar of soap and I could go on and on.
It sounds just like England of old (I think we had a revolution to rid ourselves of draconian rules and laws) if the prisoners wanted food, blankets, firewood, candles - the families had to provide it and then pay the guards to make sure the prisoner received the items. Prisons in America are doing the same damned think now - because "prisoners should pay to be in prison".
Our son has prison employment (slave labor at its best) and worked his way up to the top wage of 30 cents an hour, when he is called to work. He said last month he made $19.00 - he must pay for paper, pencils, stamped envelopes, underclothes, shoes, warm clothes and personal hygene products.
They have large signs at the prison talking about rehabilitation, yet once a person is released on parole or probation they are treated as low class citizens, without rights, and if a sex offender then you are an untouchable - and since they cannot force the individual to wear a sign proclaiming their conviction - they make them register---forever.
I sold my car and now take the bus, so I can afford all the expenses of having two sons in prison. So, now I either take the bus or walk 15 minutes to the Ace Cash Express store, where I hand them $150 in cash (which I had to walk to the bank to get) and pay a fee of only $4.95. HUH! *ONLY* $4.95!
Thankfully my Iowa son makes a higher wage at his prison job (60 cents an hour), so I don't need to send him money very often. However, the other day, I did put $35 on his phone account and the fee was $6.95.
This article hits so close to home that it makes my blood boil!
Less than a week ago, my 8 year old son and I were locked in a hallway with other visitors at the jail. They made a big scene of arresting a young mother right in front of my son who is now convinced that the police take kids' mom's away for no reason. The answer from the Sargent on duty was: don't bring your kid to a jail if you don't want him to see things like that or be treated like that. Was there really no other option? Did they make the best choice for the safety of all the visitors?
I hate visiting when certain officers are there at the desk because they treat us like dog poo that they stepped in. And the female officer who tells me how attractive my husband is. Just awful. This experience has changed how I view the world. It really has.
