"While North Carolina's law banning registered sex offenders from places children gather remains on hold, a state senator who is running for attorney general this fall has proposed creating a placeholder law he says will protect children at daycare centers, playgrounds, arcades and amusement parks."While North Carolina's law banning registered sex offenders from places children gather remains on hold, a state senator who is running for attorney general this fall has proposed creating a placeholder law he says will protect children at daycare centers, playgrounds, arcades and amusement parks."
Notice it says, " state senator who is running for attorney general."
It's election time and this guy is playing his trump card----being tough on sex offenders.
Disgusting, but this is how politicians use the registry to their advantage and fan the fear of the general public to their advantage.

DA offices and US Attorneys just can't wait to send out their press releases of either the rare person who reoffended or the first time offender totally losing everything they ever worked for. These reporters seem to revel in the offender's humiliation. Far from anything that resembles good journalism, the media acts like a vampire in presenting the offender is the very worst possible terms. They basically rely on the criminal complaint, will often go out to the neighborhood where the offender lives and interview all the neighbors for ("oh my God, we have one of 'those" living among us") type statements and shows the offender at their arraignment in a jump suit. Very often times, they cherrypick cases where the offender worked with children. In fact, almost every piece of news of someone arrested for a sex crime I have EVER seen involved a priest, daycare worker or teacher. I rarely see stories involving a carpenter, stock broker or used car salesman. This is intentional since people from all walks of life end up on the registry. But the media gives the purposeful appearance that only someone who worked with a child would pursue children and therefore commit a sex crime.
I am so sick of the propaganda that is out there. I am SICK of seeing my son every Halloween terrified because they publicize on the local news where to look for the "little red dots" of houses in his neighborhood. The media needs to stop worrying about ratings and money and start reporting the TRUTH for a change.
