gee whiz! For some reason I have observed (and this is not a factual statement just an observation) female judges often seem harsh? Are they trying to compensate for being in a position that was long thought of as a male job? I just do not know - the judge in my sons case was also female and she was harsh and biased. That judge has since fallen from grace a great deal. One thing that I do not understand about this case is that I thought a wife could not be compelled to testify against her husband?

The system does this all the time. They will threaten the victim to force them to testify. They did that with daughter and I - even though we BOTH had a right not to testify. I've heard the same happen with another case, where the state threatened another child, to force them to testify against their abuser. The victim advocates just allow it to happen, because they are not there to do what is best for the child or victim, they do what is best to help the state win the cause against the abuser.

If I had to do it all over again, I would go to jail for refusing to testify. It would be my way of giving the state the middle finger for not listening to us, when we asked for a plea deal that we all agreed with.

This country would be a better country if every citizen was mandated to-----1) go to prison and live there for a year, 2) join the military for a year, or 3) endure the rigors of a criminal investigation.

Let everyone get a nice big taste of what our country is really about at times. I know if many of the posters here had realized how this country conducts itself during a criminal investigation, they would have made some different decisions.

It would make us all better, more informed citizens.

I do know one thing----Going to prison for a year would reduce the conservative population of this country. As I have often said, "A liberal is a conservative that went to prison."

I know in my case they wouldn't tell me stuff about the case as I could be called as a witness. I told them how can that be when I know nothing about what went on.
If I knew then what I know now things would of happened a lot different.
The thing is most people have no idea and go with what is told to them not realizing that is usually the worst thing to do. If you have never been in a situation like this you have NO idea.
I for one would not want to have to do a year in prison for nothing. I have learned so much in the 3 years with my husband.

Well, IF the judge, only sent her to jail for 3 days, and IF (as the article states) the woman did this: "The victim refused to attend court the day of trial, going so far as to tell the State Attorney's Office that she didn't care if she was arrested as a result of her not complying with the court's subpoena. "
And IF, she was living at her parents (and not homeless) then I can see the judge's point...tho' maybe community service would have been a better way to go.
While I empathize with the woman in that she was worried about child support, she had a civic and moral duty to testify at the trial.

And they improved the criminal justice system how? It just got worse.

Heard of the 'Smarter Sentencing Act of 2015'?
Look it up. It basically will give judges more leeway in sentencing non violent drug offenders.
It was introduced by Sen. Mike Lee(R) and not just R, But 'TEA PARTY' R, along with Dick Durban(D) and , wait for it....TED CRUZ, another EVIL conservative...

I'm curious coastie what you think of the ACLU. They have filed several amicus briefs on behalf a of RSOs and as much as a lot of people dislike them they are definitely not our enemy.

There was no way in the world that any reasonable person would judge my one comment as conservative bashing. My statement was my opinion that people go to prison with conservative views and become liberals. No more, no less.

Frankly with the way you jump to conclusions before you even click links, I doubt you were ever in law enforcement. I imagine they try to keep people like you out of law enforcement.

They are the only organization outside of the sex offender specific ones that fight for us. For me the ACLU is more of the let's not look a gift horse in the mouth. We have very few allies and they continually file amicus briefs siding with us.

I won't get into it with the political stuff. I will say this, I agree with Independent, the ACLU has become more and more involved in so cases over the past five years or so. I think I've collected more than twenty links for the help they've provided in cases and that was just in the past three years. K

When I was first released, I moved in a rent house behind my parents until I could find a place of my own.

A little while later Oklahoma passed residency restrictions and I was in violation according to the new law. The DA asked me to move.

I wrote a letter to several people and the ACLU was the only organization willing to intervene on my behalf. They thought that since I had moved there before the residency restrictions were enacted, that the authorities could not force me to move.

To make a long story short, I found a piece of property and moved anyway, but I will never forget the nice letter and phone calls I received from the Oklahoma chapter of the ACLU.
