P.S. I saw a full-time office job (HR assistant) posted at the hospital where I work that I might be qualified for and I lost no time in turning in my application. ^o^
But the last place I was at was a minimum security prison. The offered a bunch of vo tech courses. Now these inmates at this place were about ready to go home, so they took a nine month course just before their release.
I remember that the two courses that had a very high job placement rate was masonry and welding. The guys that took these course almost always found a job upon their release---and these jobs paid well. Hard work, but they were good paying jobs.
That was my experience, anyway. It was a requirement at that prison here in Oklahoma that EVERYONE had to take a vo-tech course before they were released. I did not have to because I already had job skills in the medical field. Two of my best friends took welding and are now making close to $25 per hour.
That was my experience with job training within the prison system.

If he can, commercial HVAC Techs make KILLER money...
Good for you, apply for anything that will make your life better...Even though as a foreman, I used to but heads with an HR manager, LOL.
As I said a few times, my County has a program called "Jail Industries" where some low security Inmates, for lack of a better word, behaved themselves in lock up, were given the opportunity to join the program...Most were young drug offenders....They were given the crappiest jobs because none had any skill....
Now, to be honest, most were worthless and if I told the Deputy who picked them up that I didn't want them back, they didn't come back........I know, it sounds harsh, but my first priority was to my company....That said, and I've posted this before because I am proud of it.....Kid was 19, drug offender who knew he screwed up and wanted to change.....He came in as my grinder, I was a Dept. Lead at the time,....He had to keep up with 5 welders, not easy, I had a great crew, but he busted his ass and even got ahead many times so I taught him how to weld and when he was released, I hired him full time.....About 8 months later, when I was given the Foreman job, I promoted him to my old Lead position...
I brag on it because he is a success story...
As I've said, as a ex con, especially as an SO, you have to stand above the rest....
One of the issues is that there are high school kids taking college courses now, some students attending the local community college are as young as 16 which is one reasons they discourage registrants from attending, i have not looked into this yet as things can change in the 2+ yrs til he gets out so i have yet to researched it in my area yet. internet access will be limited if allowed at all.
Still I tell him what all is going on and how some of you are surviving what kind of work you are finding ect...anything to give him hope. Reading your post is encouraging and i pass this on to him as well.
