In prison, he is most likely required to enroll in and complete the SOTP---Sex Offender Treatment Program. The problem is that in most states the SOTP will not allow him to enroll in the program unless he admits guilt. Unless he admits guilt, he will not be able to take the SOTP. If he does not take the SOTP, most likely they will give him a program failure and he will lose some good time credit.
You asked, “My husband has to participate in the SOMM program because he took a plea agreement, which he was pretty much forced into. So what happens if he goes in there and tells the truth instead of what they want to hear?”
When he signed a plea agreement, he admitted guilt to the crime. Yes, I know and understand that innocent men do plead guilty, but once he signs that plea and admits guilt in front of the judge at the sentencing hearing, the state will hold him to that guilty plea.
He cannot very well tell them he was not guilty of the crime after he already admitted guilt by signing a plea bargain.
You said, “So what happens if he goes in there and tells the truth instead of what they want to hear?”
I don’t want to disappoint you or any of the other members of the board, but the “truth” is irrelevant. As far as the prison system is concerned he is guilty. If he told them the truth and said he was innocent, they would most likely not allow him to participate in the SOMM. If he does not participate in the SOMM, he will likely never make parole.
Probably the best course of action would be for him to tell them what happened, but admit that he did indeed have sex with the young lady. This would cover the fact that he had sex with her, but it was not the typical rape and that he pled guilty b/c he did indeed commit a crime. By doing this, he can enroll in and complete the SOTP program. It is imperative that he take this program if he has any hopes of an early release.
If he tries to tell them he is not guilty of anything, he will have a lot of problems.
Most of the folks here are new to the criminal justice or prison system. The justice system is not equipped to deal with innocent people, so as far as they are concerned, every inmate is guilty.
This also underscores the fact that much of the criminal justice system and prison system is merely a game and the offenders who are successful have learned to “play the game” at times. Playing the game means telling them what they want to hear sometimes.
I hope I have not busted your bubble.

“The Rev. Thomas P. Shoback, 66, was eligible to seek release Aug. 19, but the state parole board refused to consider his case because he has not taken part in treatment mandated by law.”
Your husband needs to learn how to work with the criminal justice system to his advantage. My motto in prison was this----Take what the system offers to give you, but don’t attempt to make the system do something it refuses to do.”
