As some of you already know, I was in the medical profession, so I want to address a problem for registrants and their families that I think is important.
Many of the ladies on the board, and some of the registrants, are completely overwhelmed and bewildered with the happenings we must face every day as either a registrant or the love one of a registrant. Some of you may find it difficult sleeping and organizing your thoughts, which is to be expected. The stress this process puts a person through is just like a meat grinder to both the body and soul.
If you find yourself where you think you can no longer cope, are depressed, or getting angry at the entire world, I suggest you find a physician and pour your heart out to him. He can put you on a mind antidepressan/anti-anxiety medication that will surely help, and might make a world of difference. If he tries one drug and it does not have the desired effect, he can try another one until he finds the correct fit for your needs.
None of us are invulnerable to these emotions and sometimes in life we do need a little extra to get us over the hump.
NOW, I am not saying that you should get put on a dozen different meds until you are groggy and cannot function and I am not suggesting that you take anything unsafe.
The new antidepressants are unlike the ones we used years ago. The older ones, the tricyclic antidepressants, did not work very well and had some unwanted side effects, mainly excessive drowsiness and dryness of the mouth. There has been a big improvement in the past several years. The newer antidepressants, the SSRIs, do not make you feel like a zombie, are safe and well tolerated, and they are usually effective.
Celexa and Zoloft are two excellent antidepressants that are well tolerated and they do work. Lexapro is another.
Some of the people may already be on some type of meds to cope with all this, but some may be afraid to try. These drugs are not habit forming and they will help in most cases. Do not let scare tactics keep you from finding relief from your stress.
I am merely suggesting a mild---mild---antidepressant to allow you to sleep and organize your thoughts. I have seen people who are a nervous wreck with their entire world collapsing who have done a 180 degree turn once they find the right med.
Situations such as being a registrant or having a loved one in that predicament can sometimes literally consume a person, and i don't want that to happen to any of us.
I just suggest to try this approach if you find you cannot manage all the stress and depression. I say this as a friend who cares about all of you, but also as a medical person who dealt with this on a daily basis.

The day my son went to prison after two years of going to court every month in the state of Florida I laid down in my bed and curled up in a ball and cried and cried. I did not want to get up. I did not want to go on. I really was in so much disbelief and pain over what had happened. That was 31 months ago. I honestly believe that the only way I got out of that bed was through the strength of God that through that terrible night he gave me. I most certainly did not do it on my own accord. I did get up the next day and the may days that followed. I did it without medications. I am not saying that I did not suffer emotionally because I did. There were so many nights that I could not sleep due to anxiety attacks. I muddled through my days and there were many, many days that I could not wait to get home from work so I could lay down and sleep so I could escape my own mind. My other two sons were in pain too. All of us were suffering in our pain and coping with it each in our own way. I was not going to watch us all be destroyed by this crisis. I made up my mind that I would have to be the strong one and see us through including my son who was in prison (he is out now). I pulled my sons through by being strong. I stopped crying when I was with them, I showed them strength and determination that we were going to hold together as a family. We carried on. Before I knew it we were actually able to be with one another at family gatherings and have a good time. Yes , we were still mourning the loss of my son who was in prison but at least we were holding together and not falling apart. Everyone is different in how they choose to deal with stress and pain and heart ache. I chose to turn to God for my strength. I had faith that God was going to see me us through. I am not saying that everyday was a picnic because it wasn't. I didn't have a human being that I could talk to about what had happened so I talked to God. I am not a person who is fond of taking pills. I have taken antidepressants in the past and have always stopped taking them as I don't like messing with the natural workings of the brain. I found other ways to cure the depression and anxiety. I prayed, I bought a treadmill and walked my tail off as I mourned for my son and his trials and tribulations. God kept my son safe while he was in prison. My son tells me he never saw one altercation while he was in prison! I put my son in God's hands because he was not in my control. I had to believe that what ever happened I was going to be able to handle it. I accepted that God has a plan for my son's life and that good will come out of this. Maybe not today but eventually it will be revealed. I enrolled in college and kept myself busy with my studies. I got straight A's! It kept my thoughts positive. I learned to give my son who was in prison more credit than I had been giving him. He showed me that he was stronger than I thought he was and he is still showing me that. His strength actually fueled mine in many ways. My son's path is going to be long and its not going to be easy, but I thank God that he is alive and that he is out of prison and has a chance to rebuild his life to the best of his ability. I thank God that I am still sane, healthy and strong and that I am still able to give love and support to all my son's. I hope that I have written something here that helps anyone of you to get through your pain and heart ache.
