I live in Alabama and it has been a living hell! My son is looking into moving to Oregon. I will miss him but I want him to have some kind of life.

We are in NJ & they are giving us a hard time with living together. Dyfus, not parole, But we are thinking move to PA...

The difficult thing about moving is getting permission from my home state to move and getting off lifetime probation. My state gives about everone lifetime probation no matter what you did. Maybe it is alot easier to move in NJ.

From what I have researched Oregon seems to be the best place to live for OFFENDERS (not predators) that have had consensual NON-VIOLENT crimes against minors. In fact, OFFENDERS will not even be on the state sex offender website, just PREDATORS. Can someone verify this???

The ending is disturbing in that it seems to infer that legislators are considering listing more than just the predatory offenders on the public registry. You may want to look into this legislation to see if it would affect you should you move to Oregon.

Make sure you check the rules government your son however, if he is on probation he cannot leave the country right now – in addition, any state you decide to live in you need to actually check and contact someone about the SO laws. In some states when you move they automatically apply their system to the SO but in some states they follow the mandate of the state where you were convicted.. So if you lived in Florida where registration id for life no matter the crime – and you move to certain states you are still required to register for life no matter what the system is there. Also Florida keeps everyone on the list forever! If you legally move to another state they keep you on the list – the reason they give is that you might come back! Worse than that they have over 5 pages of deceased SO’s on their website!
Early on I had checked several states and I think it was North Dakota that I found had no living restrictions – they actually said in the FAQ’s that everyone has a right to live somewhere!

Wisconsin also keeps every offender that lives here moves here etc on for live and charge a fee to do it each year of $100.

Maryland has no residency restrictions either but they have so many laws and come up with new ones every year. They are AWA compliant. No lifetime GPS but when 1st out you have GPS. They also follow something called C.O.M.E.T. bunch of crap. If convicted of anything involving a minor you are considered a Violent Predator and will register for life.(Tier III ) worst of the worst. It doesn't matter if there was proof of any contact or not., so basically you are (in their eyes) the same as someone who kidnaps,rapes and murders. I live in a small town and know most of the Deputies and some of the State Troopers so I am open and talk to them alot about these laws. My brother also lives in a small town and is fortunate that everyone knows him and do not believe all the crap.( There are a few who are not lifetime locals there and they have posted Posters about him but the locals take them down) so all in all he does ok. The problem he has is P/P they are JERKS!!!!!!!!! Violate him on anything and everything will even lie to get him locked up. He is always let out 30-45 days later because there was no violation but it has not stopped them yet. He is about to be violated for the 3rd time in a year again for something stupid. He is supposed to be off Parole in May so all we can do is PRAY PRAY PRAY for MAY.

People have the need to be morally better than others and we become that tool that allows them to justify their actions of wrong doing, by using our past against us, our past crimes are making others feel better about themselves. So as long as people do this, nowhere is a good place to live.

The longer you live in one place people get to know you as a person. Find a place and stay, my home after about 20 years has become my prison. It would be almost impossible to move even though my crime was 1979 34 years ago.

Regarding the article about the Oregon registry: I would bet that most, if not all who are moving there are doing so to try to move on with their lives and not be harassed rather than reoffending. Crazy idea, huh?

I Live in Maine...It could be worse.. But It could always be better. I have tried to convince my SO Husband to move but where we know what to expect here its so hard to pack up. I live in VERY SMALL TOWN where they combine 4 towns on onw central towns registry and there are one 11 SOs for miles Which makes it very hard. We only have a couple friends that know the "real" us. My husband recently got fired from his job because they found out he was an SO. Mind you he worked in a mill with all Men no kids in sight but it doent matter their policy is not to hire anyone like him...Sad he cant keep work based on his ability instead his History will haunt him and me for the rest of our lives...Good luck finding somewhere Free from all this...

I thought discrimination was illegal in this country... That would be one I would call the EEOC and the ACLU about... firing because of a criminal record? Unless he didn't put down on the application prior to hire... that they can fire you for....

how about outside the United states? is there a safer place for RSO? My husband was an SO and he had his registration in LA.

Where I live, they have eliminated the conviction box on applications. It seems to be happening in more places. Of course, they can still do a background check.
