The first part, at least.
This morning my son agreed to a plea, and will appear before a judge on Thursday. If all goes as planned, he will receive a suspended sentence, and be able to come home. Though he will face a prolonged probation, with a long list of conditions that will make his life very difficult, he will not be in prison.
Since we went into this being told that he was almost certainly facing at least five years in prison, it is a vast relief to have him home. On the other hand, without saying anything that might emperil his probation, what we've learned about how these things happen, are prosecuted, how DAs and judges really work... It's all been horrifying and sad.
Now we move on to the next steps, try to hold life together, and think of ways to rebuild.

i can not wrap my head around how a judge can sit there stone sober, straight faced, totally dead pan and require someone taking a plea to they swear that they have received no offers that promised to limit ones sentence. and not only an offer to lessen a sentence but it's wrapped up in a threat.
that's all pleas are, a promise and a threat all in one neat little package. "take the plea and i'll see that you only do x years. don't take it and you'll probably do xx number of years. choke on 10-20yrs or die with 40-90yrs.
