Empty Nests Support Group
Empty nest syndrome is a general feeling of depression and loneliness that parents/other guardian relatives feel when one or more of their children leave home. Empty nest syndrome has become more prevalent in modern times, as the extended family is becoming less common than in past generations, and the elderly are left living by themselves.
When I can't take it anymore, I don't know what state you live in, (I live in New York). I dial 311 and ask to speak to a crisis call center, they connect me to a place called NYC Well, and that's where i vent, they're great and make sure I'm okay. I also have a counselor to speak to once a week. Other than that I am fighting to stay sane so I keep chuggin' along. If you want to write, I am here for you.
I know how you feel. I too am a recent "empty-nester". My youngest son moved out last October and got married this past July. Although he left almost a year ago, I recently began to fall into a state of depression and I think it has a lot to do with COVID, because my activities are limited. Albeit, I still work outside of the house, but I limit the time I spend with my young grandkids (ages 1 & 2) because of my exposure to the public. I had been spending my time with my sister, but her husband recently returned to the states from the Middle East. So I thought it would be a great idea for me to find an online forum where people who are experiencing the same feelings as me. I spend a lot of time of Facebook because I reside in Texas, but I am originally from California and most of my good friends, classmates and family are there, but not many of them are empty-nesters or they have husbands or mates to fill that empty void.
I was a single dad, and if I hadn’t met someone supportive who I’m now with I don’t know where I would be. You’re in a tough situation. So much so. It’s pretty easy to see that if you keep going it’s going to get better though. It has to. :-)
